I am a college graduate and have just moved back home from LA to save some $$ to move to NY to try and get my PR career started again. I have had 3 pr internships and moved to LA to try and get a job there... unfortunately I was there 9 months and nothing panned out. Now I am at a crossroads... Here's the deal. I have been accepted into NYU housing for the summer. I don't have a job in NY but was originally planning on hitting the pavement hard and doing interviews until my summer housing was up (August 9th). I am worried that I won't be able to secure a job in NY in the summer because so many interns go there and who would want to pay for labor when their getting it free in the summer??? So my thought was to stay at home and save a couple more months until Sept (when college kids go home) then make my way to ny. Here's the issue. I don't have a guaranteed place to stay if I go in Sept but I do if I go in June for nyu housing. Another thing is I don't want to go in June if I can't secure a job until July because I'm afraid I'll run out of money to put down on an apt. I do have serving experience so obviously I would serve during the summer. But I need to be doing what I came there for... PR!!!! Any suggestions would be very helpful!!

Summer is the WORST time ...
...to be looking for a job.

It's a constant revolving door of staffers (particularly senior managers who make the hiring decisions) taking a week here, two long weekends there, non-stop from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Job or Locale? If you could only pick one...
This advice may not be popular with the "dream big" people who say New York is better than sliced bread. I love the Big Apple, but I'm a bread-on-the-table's-worth-two-in-the-bush kind of girl.

I'd say look from a distance while you have a roof overhead -- and also consider looking from a distance at other cities. I am not particularly encouraged by what I've heard about the NY job market.

My question is: which matters most to you, job or locale?

If you had to choose between working in your field or working outside your field (Starbucks?) but being in NYC, which would you choose?

If you'd rather work IN your field for sure, take a peek at job markets around the country, and go where there's a job instead of going where there's a Statue of Liberty.

I would wait till fall
It's true. Everyone has interns in the summer so they won't need to hire as much. Plus, hiring can be slightly erratic, since everyone is out on vacation, and many times, no decisions can be made until xx and xx are back from the Bahamas or wherever they are.
Also, I think you would be better off saving up money for now. Getting an apartment in NYC can be incredibly hard and terribly expensive. (With first & last month's rent and deposit, it can easily get to over $3,500, which you probably won't be able to save while working in NY if you're living at NYU).

I moved to NYC on a whim without saving much and now am greatly in debt because of it so I would always recommend trying to save as much as you can before taking the leap! Plus, you'll also get to avoid the gross-ness that is New York City in the summer!

Best of luck though, whatever you decide!
