BAGHDAD ? Forget the rocket attacks, concrete blast walls and lack of a sewer system. Now try to imagine luxury hotels, a shopping center and even condos in the heart of Baghdad.

That's all part of a five-year development "dream list" _ or what some dub an improbable fantasy _ to transform the U.S.-protected Green Zone from a walled fortress into a centerpiece for Baghdad's future.

But the $5 billion plan has the backing of the Pentagon and apparently the interest of some deep pockets in the world of international hotels and development, the lead military liaison for the project told The Associated Press.

For Washington, the driving motivation is to create a "zone of influence" around the new $700 million U.S. Embassy to serve as a kind of high-end buffer for the compound, whose total price tag will reach about $1 billion after all the workers and offices are relocated over the next year.

If you build it they will come
What a waste of money, the only people who will be attracted to the Green Zone are men with rockets.

It shows the same delusional thinking that brought the US into the present debacle in Iraq in the first place. Be funny if it wasn't so pathetic.

Does anyone outside of neocon circles seriously believe all's going to be peaches and cream in Iraq even after the present battles are over? As soon as the hush-hush oil bill surfaces in final form and Iraqis and the world (except America, of course) see the US oil grab for what it is, do they seriously believe the Iraqi people will just accept it?

And it will only take one motivated Sunni or Shi'a to blast that sucker down. How sad that the first thing they reconstruct is the multi-million dollar embassy and not the surrounding area where people lost their homes and livelihoods. I'm sure they are thanking their lucky stars for the Americans right now. So much for Democracy. We replaced who the people in power were with new people in power and lower the power of living for the only other class in the country.
