I'm a work-from-home freelance art director. My iMac G5 shows signs of wearing out (a few months after the 3-yr. warranty has expired, of course). I'm hesistant to buy a new Intel-based iMac because I fear my primary software--Quark XPress 6.5--won't work well or at all.

Does anyone have experience with this? Will I need to upgrade to Quark 7 and, if so, how well does that work on the new iMacs? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Switch to InDesign(Adobe CS3) . You'll never go back!

Yeah, I know, I know. : ) But my clients and editors all work in Quark, so I need to work in Quark, too.

Quark 7 hasn't quite caught up yet so it's pretty quirky. Check online to see if there are some drivers you can download to update. Moving to InDesign is definitely your best bet.

We just upgraded our computers to the Intel-based Macs, and we are still using Quark 6.5 (we've decided not to upgrade to 7 because our company is slowly switching to InDesign). To answer your question, yes, Quark is extremely buggy on the new Mac. Lots of really stupid things, like dialog boxes get locked up and you have to escape out of them 10 times before they finally work right. Also, we have trouble with our Quark files on the network ... for some reason they ignore all permissions and you have to open them using the File>Open in the Quark menu otherwise they make duplicate files and they're all locked. Lots of weird stuff like that. But nothing horribly bad that keeps us from working altogether. We still get our jobs done with a little more aggravation than usual ... but we can't wait for InDesign.

Oh, and you should get used to saving every other minute (if you aren't already in the habit) because Quark likes to shut down the computer for no reason. It seems to get in moods. For example, it hasn't happened to me in a while, and since yesterday, it's froze 3 times. This only happens in Quark, never in the other programs, so it's gotta be Quark, not the new OS.

Thanks so much for all the info. On Quark's website, there's this:

Quark Announces Availability of Free QuarkXPress 7.31 Updater

Maybe that helps? Or have you already tried it?
