| Enigma418 | Posted 5/5/2008 5:17:26 PM | show profile i'm toying with the idea of going to a conference in another state this august related to my field. my co won't pay for it. it will potentially put me in touch with others who can help along my relocation efforts. no guarantee but it will establish a face to face that i would have to work for otherwise. plus there will be seminars for the areas i am lacking. it's gonna set me back about $900 with conference cost and airfare. |
| westsidestory | Posted 5/5/2008 10:12:22 PM | show profile If you can afford to go, go. The expense is a tax deduction (ask your accountant) and networking with peers is often worth the trouble. The younger you are, the more useful it can be. |
| seeattleme | Posted 5/6/2008 1:00:20 AM | show profile depends where the coference is. In a big city, so you can possibly schedule some interviews /lunches while you're there? somewhere you might want to live or work? go. Otherwise, i have to say no--save your $$ for the conferences in the big cities or places you want to work someday, plan ahead, send resumes, schedule exploratory interviews. People at those conferrences are usually tired, want to cly in, give their speech, meet and greet a bit, and go home. They're rarely in a schmoozy mood (god I ^&&^ing hate that word) . |
| writesonwater | Posted 5/6/2008 2:03:12 AM | show profile If you can afford it, go. Nothing to lose. If it's helpful and something you need to say you go to, then so much the better. I wouldn't go into debt on anything speculative -- I'd save the credit card for a pre-scouted trip with interviews and visits set up. Some conferences have been a huge help for me, while others -- not so much. Very often, attendees are fried and not particularly helpful. Others go to see their friends, with little room for networking. Good luck! |
