Topic: Writing Thank You Notes

| Bruingrl14 | Posted 5/6/2008 10:14:05 AM | show profile I was recently offered a fabulous job, however I have to decline the offer as I've been given the opportunity to finish my master's degree for free (essentially). I have already verbally declined the job offer over the phone, but would like to write something briefly to the people who interviewed me. I sincerely hope that I can work for the company once I have finished completing my degree. It is a decision that I truly agonized over. The opportunity to earn my degree free of charge must be taken advantage of in the upcoming months, but another job will be there in the future.... or at least that is what I keep telling myself. What exactly do I say in these thank you notes? I know that typically in a thank you note you restate your interest and qualifications for the position, but this situation is a bit different. I'd greatly appreciate any ideas! |
| karriew | Posted 5/6/2008 11:46:05 AM | show profile You have the perfect reason to decline. I would restate your interest in working for the company once you've finished your degree, and then stay in touch periodically with your contact. Any reasonable person will understand that a free graduate degree only can enhance your marketability. I don't know many who would refuse. I would keep an eye out for mention of the contact and organization and send a quick e-mail if you notice they're mentioned in the press--say they marry or get promoted--or if the company itself does something interesting, etc. That way, you have a good chance of being remembered when you reapply in the future. Since your interest is genuine, staying in touch over the next year or two should be easy enough. Good luck! |
| kerry_feather | Posted 5/6/2008 1:10:07 PM | show profile | email poster Sounds just right! What a great opportunity! I would write them pretty much everything you just said in your note - how this was a really hard decision because you would love to work for them, but that at this time you have to finish up your degree. I would also mention that you will have some value added to bring back to them after the degree! Congrats on getting the offer, and on grad school! |
