I freelance for a magazine as both a writer and a Senior Writing Editor. The Editor-in-Chief recently gave me a raw interview in question-answer format that he had conducted. I was asked to convert it into a highly stylized article to be the next issues' cover piece. Drawing on the quotes and responses from the brief interview, I wrote a 2000 word article in my own voice. When I received the final published copy, the Editor had credited himself with the writing of the article claiming that he did the interview and I was simply doing my job as Senior Writing Editor and, therefore, did not deserve the writing credit. I feel robbed since I agonized over each sentence in that article but I'm not sure who's actually in the wrong here- me or him. Any insight into this would be much appreciated.
Thank you!

Hmmm...
...that sounds pretty fishy. I've never seen a "Senior Writing Editor" on a masthead before, it's either "Senior Writer" or "Senior Editor" so your job title is confusing--i.e. what are the expectations of your position? Are you mostly writing or mostly editing? But for sure, you should have been credited as at least contributing to the story, if not given a co-byline. I'd still stick it in your portfolio because you did the work, and you know it. (And keep looking for other opportunities because this one smells bad...)

In an ideal world the byline would have been given to you, with additional reporting by EIC.

See if there is a way you can get added to the byline and have design create a PDF with your name on it. That way you can have it as a clip.

thanks for your input!
sounds fishy indeed and i've bowed out of doing any more work for the magazine, writing or otherwise.
contacting the design dept for a pdf is a good idea- thought of just photo shopping my name in there but, of course, that's not the wisest idea.
sigh.....lessons learned
thanks again!
