| wealthy apple | Posted 5/8/2008 5:16:30 PM | show profile | email poster Is it okay to use my friend's New York address when applying for jobs? I'm moving out there in August anyways. Just curious... |
| tearsheetj | Posted 5/8/2008 5:34:22 PM | show profile I think so, if you will be there in a couple months anyway and could say that is where you expected to be staying initially. |
| seeattleme | Posted 5/8/2008 8:52:00 PM | show profile Yes, certainly, especially if you are moving out there, but even if you're not. Just make sure you can get your mail there, that it won't be sent back. |
| bookmap | Posted 5/8/2008 11:13:33 PM | show profile Just be aware that at any time between now and when you actually move, you may be contacted for an interview. Are you prepared to fly out to New York for a job interview at the drop of a hat? If not, I wouldn't start applying for jobs with a New York address until July. |
| seeattleme | Posted 5/9/2008 12:59:47 PM | show profile you could say you're traveling right now and arrange to come in in two weeks or so when you"back". That sounds so continental! It'll go over big if you're contacted by someone at Conde Nast or Hearst. |
| missprint | Posted 5/9/2008 2:10:24 PM | show profile I think it's acceptable. I did it, but like the previous person said, you have to be prepared to get out to NYC on a moment's notice if someone calls since they are assuming that you are there already. Alternately, one thing I tried (which actually resulted in me ending up flying out to NYC for an interview) was to list both my current address, and my New York address, and to say in the cover letter I was moving there on XXX. |
| cali1296 | Posted 5/9/2008 2:19:56 PM | show profile I'm in a similar situation. I just bought a house in Philly, where I'm moving, but I won't actually be there until June. I applied for a position the other day and used my future address and put an asterick next to it, and lower down I said, "relocating to this address June 12, 2008." (I got that advice from WordyBird on here -- thanks!) It seemed to have been effective; I got a response already from HR. But, it looks like they want to fill the position before I move out there, so I might have to let this job go. |
