Could one of the eds out there please tell me which is the correct way to hyphenate the following phrase. I say its one way, an editor that I work w/ says its the other way.

short order-soda fountain concept

or

short-order, soda-fountain concept

Thanks in advance!

No. 2 is most definitely right

I would say neither is correct. I would do it as:

short-order, soda fountain concept

with short-order hyphenated and soda fountain not hyphenated b/c it's already a compound concept. (It's the same reason you wouldn't hyphenate "income-tax refund.")

I'd go with the second choice as well?while the hyphen in "soda fountain" is optional and a matter of style, it looks inconsistent to leave it out while also hyphenating "short order."

Now the problem is whether or not to tell her that she's hyphenating wrong. Part of me is tempted to just let it go, since I'm going to be leaving my job soon anyways. At least now I know that I am correct in my hyphenations, for a while there I thought I was the one who was incorrect & I kept second guessing myself.

What are the chances that she's going to say: "Thank you. You're right. I see the error of my ways. And to think I've been hyphenating wrongly all these years?"

About zero?

Just let it go and take comfort in knowing you're right.
