| larellan | Posted 5/12/2008 12:19:37 AM | show profile I started freelancing for a website and after I've written a certain number of pieces, I'm supposed to submit an invoice to get paid... could anyone offer any input on what the format of such an invoice should be? I have absolutely no idea! |
| fake.it.til.you.make.it | Posted 5/12/2008 1:42:03 AM | show profile It's really pretty easy. You just need to include your name, contact info, SS#, date you're sending it as well as the company's name and contact info. Then include some lines that spell out each assignment you're invoicing them for and all the necessary details (like "Web content -- 1000 words @ $1/word"), then total everything up for them. If you do a google search for "sample freelance writer invoice," if you need to get an idea of what it should look like. Here's one example: http://aboutfreelancewriting.com/articles/howtosample/sampleinvoice.htm I like to save a generic version of an invoice, then save a version for each client that's already ready to go with their contact info so I don't have to re-type it every time. |

| wineaux | Posted 5/12/2008 12:14:02 PM | show profile Do you have Microsoft Office Excel? There's standard one in there, titled Billing Statement. |

| Cyrus | Posted 5/12/2008 5:08:21 PM | show profile I wouldn't put my social security number on there at all. You want to minimize the number of times that's put on documents to the absolute minimum. They will have the necessary information on the W-9 you'll probably be required to file with them. The specific format will depend on how you bill, also. If you bill hourly, you'll need columns for your hourly rate and number of hours billed. If it's just per story, then all you really need is a description of the stories written and a fee for each story in separate columns and a total at the bottom. At the top, also put your name and address, as well as the company being billed, along with an invoice number and date. Several sites have templates, including free office suites like Open Office. ------ Cyrus Afzali Astoria Communications www.astoriacomm.com |
| snappiness | Posted 5/12/2008 6:07:19 PM | show profile SSN I put it on my invoices but I label it as "Tax I.D. number." But you're right, they have it on the W9 so I don't really need to. |
