| anonymousdesigner | Posted 5/12/2008 3:29:53 PM | show profile | email poster ...but I remembered all the wonderful advice an encouragement you all had for the young designer from Kansas the day she lost her first job in NYC and it made the situation much better for me. My thanks to you all for that. I did call unemployment as soon as I got home and will be able to collect for up to 6 months. My plan is to spend about 2 months polishing and expanding my software skills and beefing up my portfolio with some personal and pro bono projects and then focus daily on the job search. If any of you know of any openings in the LA area, please let me know. Also, I'd appreciate any feedback you all could privide with regards to my resume and porfolio. Send me an e-mail and I'll forward the link to you. I value your opinions as you have always been there with advice and support in the past when I've come here for help. Thank you again, everyone! |
| catlondon | Posted 5/12/2008 3:54:19 PM | show profile It sucks you were laid off although it often leads to a better opportunity. But it still sucks. Your plan sounds good, but a word to the wise, you do get taxed on unemployment and they may not take it out of your check so keep the tax implications in the back of your mind, thus avoiding an unpleasant surprise down the road. Good luck! You sound like you have good head on your shoulders and will come out of this in a better place than you were. |
| writesonwater | Posted 5/13/2008 10:37:00 AM | show profile | email poster I'm so glad you had a reserve to draw on. Sounds like you have taken a good, deep breath and have a plan. I'm sure you'll land on your feet. Let us know how else we can help. Many have walked before you, that's for sure. |
| ConfidentDesigner | Posted 5/14/2008 10:04:15 PM | show profile anonymous- I've been laid off THREE times throughout my lengthy career and YES, each time led to much better opportunities. I have a friend who's my age (52) and she says the same thing. She's been laid off 6 times! It sounds like you're off on the right foot with a great attitutde. That's way more than most have in your position. Did you like the job? Sometimes when you don't like the job it's a relief to get laid off (like what happened to me at my last job...I was SO relieved and still am...that happened Oct. 1, 2007!). Good luck to you! |
| anonymousdesigner | Posted 5/16/2008 12:23:13 AM | show profile I remember when you got laid off, Confidenr Designer. The fact that you found another, better position was also encouraging. Yes, I was relieved and only wish they had put me out of my misery sooner. I did a quick pro-bono project today, laying out a single page newsletter/mailer for a local non profit whose cause is near to my heart. I got a piece for my portfolio, free advertising, a grateful client with contacts and for the first time in months I actually felt like a graphic designer! Onward and upward! |
| hayfell | Posted 5/17/2008 10:33:52 AM | show profile I am looking for someone who was laid off... I need to interview someone who lost their job (and turned it into a better opportunity, or at least plans to do so). I write for Nielsen Business Media's MediaJobMarket.com, and can create a different name for you or just use your first name. I can e-mail you a few questions or we can set up a 5-minute phone interview. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! -Hayli Morrison HayliMorrison@bellsouth.net |
| anonymousdesigner | Posted 5/20/2008 4:59:25 PM | show profile | email poster Thank you, everyone... ...for your words of encouragement. I am focusing the next few weeks on getting up to speed in Flash and Dreamweaver and polishing my skills in the CS3 versions of Adobe's holy trinity for designers, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Thank heavens I invested in a new IMac a few months back! I'll keep you all posted as to my progress and, if you know of anyone in the LA area looking for a Good graphic designer, do let me know! www.coroflot.com/2635 |
