(I'm new to forums so bear with me if I mess up.)
I'm trying to pitch a story to More magazine. In April, having failed to find anything more concrete than the proper editor's name and a generic email address to the mag, I sent my first pitch. Now that it's been about 6 weeks I'm growing irked at not having heard anything. I want to contact them to see if it's held up in editorial meetings or on someone's desk, etc. Does anyone know how to get into More magazine?
Also, when my article's accepted, this will be my largest publication to date. Does it always take editors this long?
I heard major national pub editors on an ASJA webcast say just a couple months ago that it take them far longer to give acceptances than to give rejections (meaning they treat their Nos much better than they treat their Yeses). That seems to be the case; When I've talked to two other major national pubs I got a rejection within a couple of weeks at most.
Any help out there for someone trying to get from local publications to major national pubs?

Nichole

More is listed in the How to Pitch section -- take a look there for contact info and what they're ideally looking for. It may not be completely up to date, but at least it's a general idea. And follow up with them! Send another e-mail asking about it, and - as others have said - call if they don't respond.

the how to pitch section of AvantGuild? I'm not a member. Just starting to acquaint myself with mediabistro and don't want to spend $$ on a membership that I'm not comfortable with. Has AG been useful for you? Paid for itself?

Of all the journalism/writing organizations I have belonged to, Mediabistro's AG has been the most worthwhile in terms of getting info and making contacts.

Also, it isn't unusual to pitch a publication, especially a big consumer magazine, a story and not hear back at all if you have never worked with the publication before. So don't take it personally.

If I don't hear back within a couple of weeks, I move on and make the pitch elsewhere. I tend to find the editors respond quickly if they are interested in a pitch, even if it is just to tell you to hold on while they pitch it to a higher up.

Well I've got AG membership and sent a pitch to More a few months ago. I thought it was on target enough to warrant a 'no thanks' but I never got a reply. Good Luck.

Pretty sure there was a major re-structuring at More not long ago. Anything you sent awhile back, I'd send again.

And don't just walk away and pitch elsewhere after a few weeks. Send another email to the editor reminding them of your idea and saying you were hoping it would work for them but perhaps it's not the right fit, and if you don't hear from them within another week you'll assume that's the case and pitch it elsewhere. Many times that gets me a return email asking to send it again.
Two weeks isn't very much time if you consider they might have been closing when you sent it, then it sits on the desk another week, then they look at it and consider discussing at a meeting a week later....then they're closing again....Even six weeks can fly by very quickly, but I'd nudge them after 2-3 weeks.

Look at a masthead.
The "how to" pitch here on MB (AG) should give the email address format, but I believe it's firstname.lastname@meredith.com, or firstname_lastname@meredith.com.
I could be wrong, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure it out or find it.
meanwhile, you have three articles editors to choose from (if they are still there). Just pick a name and send the pitch.
Most assignments there are hard to get. Most bylines are from very established writers who have been published in national magazines and have even written books. MOst of the editors have stables of writers they already use. I'm not saying you won't get an assignment or a response, but it's almost as hard to get an assignment out of More (a cold call assignment) as it is out of O Magazine.
And yes, it does take longer to get the "yes" then the immediate "no" , but you usually hear right away if there is any interest at all. From that point, from the crafting of the pitch letter point, and submitting that, it can still take forever to get a "yes". But you always hear something from someone if there is interest in your story.

More staff changes
FYI. More has gone through some staff changes in recent months. This may affect their responses. I think that they have a redesign planned. There is a new EIC and other staff have left/been replaced. The HTP is not up to date.
