| spacedesign | Posted 5/18/2008 4:16:54 PM | show profile | email poster Is anyone out there a member of the ASJA? Is it any better than forums and other writing groups? I've been freelancing for four years now, mostly for local publications but now finally for small national pubs. A couple weeks ago the ASJA declined my application and I'm wondering if I should bother caring about it as much as I am. The whole thing was weird bc the application said send X clips if you don't have bylines in three major national pubs; yet just a couple weeks before that the organization had a webcast about how to pitch to major national pubs. My thought, upon receiving the rejection, was "Hmmm... If I already had made the Big Time, why would I need to join an organization that told how to get to the Big Time?" Anyone have any recommendations or ruminations on other writers groups? ------ http://senseofplacewriter.blogspot.com/ |
| pioneer | Posted 5/19/2008 7:46:02 PM | show profile The ASJA is great. I joined recently, and just went to my first event in NYC, which ended up being really, really helpful. If you're serious about your journalism career, I'd certainly suggest applying again once you've gotten bigger and better clips. In the meantime, consider joining the SPJ (Society of Professional Journalists). I recently joined that group as well, and from what I can tell, literally anyone can join. I just did it online, immediately, with a credit card! They have local chapters, so if you live in a decent-sized city, you should be able to make good contacts. And there's great info on the SPJ website. |

Meanwhile I'm finding these forums are tremendously helpful-- to the point of fulfilling some of my needs that I expected ASJA would meet. Have you tried AG on MediaBistro? ------ http://senseofplacewriter.blogspot.com/ |
