| WordyBird | Posted 5/20/2008 10:29:12 AM | show profile Get a load of this ad on another service: Has anyone ever said to you, "You should write a book on dating...."? We're a rapidly-growing online community focused on helping men improve their social skills, dating lives, and personal aesthetics, and we're hoping to find a female to bring a unique voice to our platform. [snip] The ideal candidate: - is an excellent writer with a degree from a top-25 University - has a lot of dating experience and gets hit on frequently - understands men, warts and all, and can communicate to us non-judgingly - understands women, and what they find attractive - is very attractive and sociable - is single, or is not in any sort of long-term relationship. - is 23-32 years old In short, the ideal candidate is just the sort of woman who our readers, or any man, would want to date. We can potentially budge on a woman who is in a relationship if she still has an exceptional grasp of the single condition, and while we're not dead-set on a top-25 school, that is consistent with the background of our team. Other factors, such as age and looks, are critical. [snip] What we are is a fun group of guys, who have a lot of female friends, but none of whom have quite the perspective, intellect, or insight to fill this role. [snip] A lot of thought went into writing this ad. ____________ REALLY? I wrote to them and told them which EOE laws they were violating and suggested that they needed advice on more than dating. Ye gods! |
| Suet | Posted 5/20/2008 11:08:15 AM | show profile Agreed. |
| spacedesign | Posted 5/20/2008 12:58:55 PM | show profile gracious! these guys are as ridiculous about their ideals of women as they are their professional ethics. nothing like making women feel worse than the chick mags all over magazine kiosks do. they'd likely edit her work like a bunch of hedonistic fascists. |
| mad fingers | Posted 5/20/2008 1:06:48 PM | show profile Just to play Devil's advocate While this reeks of frat house and match.com mentality, these guys are looking for someone "brand specific," and were honest enough to state their requirements. I suppose, as a 50-year-old sex advice columnist who went to the wrong school and doesn't get hit on half as much as she used to, I could be offended because even though I'm an excellent writer and love men "warts and all," I would never be considered for the job, but curiously, I'm not... |
| caitlinkelly | Posted 5/20/2008 1:23:12 PM | show profile Which exactly are the "Top 25" universities? What an odd thing to insist on. I'm sure they are inundated with queries. |
| foodlit | Posted 5/20/2008 1:28:31 PM | show profile Sounds to me like they're hoping for a date, not a hire. |
| WordyBird | Posted 5/20/2008 1:31:54 PM | show profile Sure, MF, I can see their "brand." It's just illegal to hire based on age, marital status, gender, or physical attributes. The rest is just plain stupid, and the other thing I told them was that the kind of woman they're looking for wouldn't go near a group of men so ignorant and oblivious, even to help. Seriously, even if she went the sex-blogger route, she'd be in with a more sophisticated crowd to start, mainly because by the time she hit 25, she'd be so tired of dealing with dolts like that she'd certainly not want to WORK with them. "Our friends lack the intellect for this"??? NICE. |
| wineaux | Posted 5/20/2008 2:08:23 PM | show profile I was thinking the same thing, food lit. I just picture a bunch of frat boys huddled and snickering around a pc as one interjects, "Hey, dude, make sure she has bit tits, too". I can't imagine a woman who would fit their profile would even consider working with such knuckle-headed idiocy. Saying it's sexist and stupid is being kind. |
| wineaux | Posted 5/20/2008 2:13:59 PM | show profile I meant big tits, not bit tits. And, I have to say it is very telling that one of the last snippets posted by them describes their female friends as not having any "insight or intellect" to help them with their project. Oh, those lucky, lucky women. If they treat their friends that way, one has to wonder how they'd treat someone they employ. |
| Agirlwalksintoabookstore... | Posted 5/20/2008 3:22:28 PM | show profile This is the biggest laugh I've gotten all day! Where did you find this, the Craigslist dating personals? As foodlit says, these guys are just looking for a date. And no self-respecting woman would apply for a job like this. If these guys describe their female friends as not having much intellect, then I certainly wouldn't want to spend time with them, "work" environment or no. |
| Grateful Deadline | Posted 5/20/2008 3:30:34 PM | show profile I'd imagine the "top 25" would be top 25 party schools. |
| mad fingers | Posted 5/20/2008 4:13:24 PM | show profile Was it even a legit job posting? On a second read, it seems more like a gag paid for by a bunch of horny trust-fund frat boys whose female "friends" are strippers. |
| HisGirlFriday | Posted 5/20/2008 4:48:58 PM | show profile I officially double-dog dare someone to respond to this. |
| Marie | Posted 5/20/2008 4:59:56 PM | show profile Actually, I know someone who would be perfect for this, even wrote a book on dating and men, is a terrific writer and smarter than anyone I know, but, alas, she's edging 50. |
| paludi1 | Posted 5/20/2008 5:01:11 PM | show profile How has that ad not been flagged already? I assume its comedic value is the only thing keeping it up there... |
| dribbledrive1 | Posted 5/20/2008 5:51:19 PM | show profile I don't know if they are violating EOE laws. If the focus of their book is "How to Score With a Gen X Girl" or whatever, the age specification may qualify as an "bona fide occupational qualification." That's a question for a lawyer, not me, but there are certainly times when it's OK to hire based on age, and this may be one of them. Personally, I have no problem with the age stipulation. This is obviously a dating book aimed at young guys, and a big point of their pitch is that it's written by a young woman they'd want to date. I have no doubt they will also pick a writer whose attractive. --I wrote to them and told them which EOE laws they were violating and suggested that they needed advice on more than dating.-- |
| WordyBird | Posted 5/20/2008 6:23:05 PM | show profile http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/wri/687605625.html I didn't want to post the link, but meh, why not? It's Criagslist, but under Writing/Editing in NYC. |
| Louisewasnothalfbad | Posted 5/20/2008 7:13:09 PM | show profile I'm guessing Julia Allison is too busy. |
| Astera | Posted 5/20/2008 8:40:12 PM | show profile I frequently see marketing assistant jobs posted on Craigslist that require applicants to submit a headshot along with their resume. Some even specify that you will not be considered if you do not comply with the photo requirement. What's that about? Can it be considered discriminatory to require a headshot for a marketing or PR job? I thought only directors and casting directors placed such a requirement on headshots. I've never replied to any of these ads, even though I happen to have a very nice headshot, because it just seems suspect to me. As does the ad you cite, WordyBird. ------ www.adventuresofastera.blogspot.com |
| writesonwater | Posted 5/20/2008 9:22:17 PM | show profile I think foodlit and gal are write on target -- this guy's baiting the hook. |
| Marie | Posted 5/21/2008 2:34:46 AM | show profile Yes, requiring a photo is absolutely against the law ( possible race discrimination), unless it's part of a modeling, acting portfolio. |
| sk268506 | Posted 5/21/2008 2:56:39 AM | show profile this sounds like someone looking for a date. |
| redheadedone | Posted 5/21/2008 9:22:06 AM | show profile The posting's been removed. |
