| voracious reader | Posted 5/26/2008 2:25:53 PM | show profile Chucho - no one would argue that one would prefer being attractive than ugly. But the question is are attractive people happier and more successful? I don't think so. And quite frankly, I, personally, place more value on my health than my looks. Sadly, that whole Grimaldi clan, with that winning hand in the genetics' beauty department, are among Europe's most unhappy uber rich families. |
| chucho | Posted 5/26/2008 3:15:51 PM | show profile I didn't say people would rather be pretty than ugly. What I said was that anyone would prefer to have the problems associated with being pretty than with being ugly. The beautiful people have problems just like everyone else, but the problems that are distinct to the beautiful people aren't big problems, really. It's like the "curse" of being famous, or rich. Apart from the problems and issues that anyone can have (being a drug addict, or listless or unfaithful or a nympho power-monger, or whatever) I maintain that being hit on all the time because you're attractive is really not a big problem. It might be a problem, but I've known plenty of lookers to notice that they all like to say it's a curse because, well, they simply want to to have empathy and to relate to the average-looking people. Pretty people are human beings, too! :) This reminds me of that scene in Breakfast Club when Clair (played by Molly Ringwald) bursts the bubble of enthusiasm about they were all going to become friends. She says, quite honestly, that come Monday that freaks will go back to the freaks, the nerds to the nerds, the losers to the losers and the pretty people to the pretty people, that this camaraderie was a temporary fantasy. (And in that film, I think this debate of the loser vs the pretty thing and each one's corresponding problems -- or lack of -- is addressed -- in a cheesy, whitewashed John Hughes film.) |
| voracious reader | Posted 5/26/2008 3:42:35 PM | show profile churcho -- family just arrived... so it's time for the bbq! Just have to laugh about your relating the Breakfast Club to this discussion. The last time anyone spoke to me about the movie was when my oldest son was in high school and he did a no-no. The principal called me and asked which Saturday I could bring him in for an all day Saturday detention. I had no clue there was a Saturday detention. She asked me, "Haven't you ever seen 'The Breakfast Club'?" Actually, at that time, I hadn't. I've since caught bits and pieces. I guess I should find the time to sit down and watch it from the beginning to the end. Welcome to Summer everyone! Happiness and good health to all! And remember the sunscreen! Don't want all those pretty faces to get all wrinkled now do we?? :) |
| Bleak Spouse | Posted 5/26/2008 4:22:06 PM | show profile sue ellen: I am bleak and unmanaged. I walk around in black suits like Edgar Allan Poe and my hair is always tassled. See: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3259/2524695667_6c7b5e5530.jpg?v=0 |
| df | Posted 5/26/2008 4:29:42 PM | show profile before I finish the piece I am working on i will procrastinate a bit ... from a personal perspective - slightly over 6 feet and pretty overshadowing for people in my company my whole life in many aspects (and funny someone should quote grace kelly, that's EXACTLY how my mom looks - seriously, making me the ugly one in the family), it is pretty hard to be taken seriously intellectually as a female if you could also skid by on your appearance. I gained weight sort of consciously to offset the effect (didn't help that much, now its more like a plus size model look, which I discovered has fans too lol), and I embraced age. Unfortunately I still don't look my 40 years. What really happens is that everyone is always questioning your motives, because, if you are attractive as a female, why don't you just get married to a rich guy and call it quits? no employer has ever believed me that I don't want kids and I am in it for the successful long run. I am sure they would if I had been ugly. because in their twisted sexist minds, what would have been my alternative then? That's essentially why I opened my own business and and now I constantly have to deal with the fact that no one believes I am the boss. Almost everyone mistakes me for the receptionist, and some people have started laughing when I told them its my agency, and then asked for the boss. Its not because I am such a sweet person - I am a pretty though person, borderline rude (for a female). I have been called a bitch, where a man most likely would only be aggressively pursuing his goals (which is considered positive in biz ;-)). Anyway, I am starting to ramble - point is, on some levels it might be easier to be tall and striking, and on others it sucks. PS: not saying that all of it above doesn't apply to any working female - just saying it doesn't make life easier to visually stand out more then others. |
| sue ellen mischke | Posted 5/26/2008 4:43:49 PM | show profile Bleak: Whatever. You are mainstream mismanaged. Unshaven? Please. Try not shaving for a month and then, maybe, just maybe, you might look disheveled. You are too conventionally attractive to look messy. It would take a lot of effort on your part. And you know it. |
| wineaux | Posted 5/28/2008 3:28:40 PM | show profile Wow, it's really spectacular to see what so many of you look like. A smoking hot group of cyber chums, I must say. I'm still contemplating posting a pic of myself, but with such a good-looking bunch I'm going to feel far too inferior. |
| WordyBird | Posted 5/28/2008 4:22:40 PM | show profile One line really stands out in the song below, "Thank God I'm Pretty": http://www.emilieautumn.com/lyrics-thankgodimpretty.html "Every skill I ever have will be in question." Because for real, if you're blonde and have a decent chest, you must be stupid and the only way you got your job is because you slept with the boss. Not that I'm cranky today or anything. |
| sue ellen mischke | Posted 5/28/2008 4:32:20 PM | show profile Sigh. |
| writesonwater | Posted 5/28/2008 4:44:54 PM | show profile I'm sorry for being a wordfreak but I have to chuckle at the idea of tassled hair. Now, tousled hair on a guy? Sorry, Bleak, that's cute too. |
| Bleak Spouse | Posted 5/28/2008 8:39:10 PM | show profile writersonwater: stop tassling me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| writesonwater | Posted 5/29/2008 12:27:17 AM | show profile Lol! Lol!!! ;) |

| Nikongirl | Posted 6/6/2008 11:47:09 PM | show profile Voracious Reader and me, Nikongirl in Toronto earlier today. What a great time we had chattering away over drinks like we've known each other for eons....Caitlin is also in town but had conflicting schedules. May try to hook up with them both again before they go back home. http://www.flickr.com/photos/26883159@N07/2557664744/ |
| writesonwater | Posted 6/7/2008 2:28:14 AM | show profile Well, let me know if y'all make it to DALLAS. And I will be in Annapolis in August... |
| caitlinkelly | Posted 6/7/2008 10:41:30 AM | show profile NG and VR, sorry I missed you both. What are the odds of three RTQers in TO at once? The NatNag awards were a lot of fun last night. Who knew that actress Jill Hennessy has a sister who's an award-winning health writer? |
| barrio99 | Posted 6/7/2008 11:03:37 AM | show profile I've been both. Prettier/attractive/good looking is always, always an edge. If you don't like it, you can ugly yourself up pretty easily and problem solved. |
| Nikongirl | Posted 6/7/2008 5:01:40 PM | show profile Caitlin are you still in TO? VR is here until Monday. Maybe we can make a plan for Sunday night if you are still around. I left you a message on your cell with all of my numbers...give me a call. Would love to see you before you go. Hey, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ! Hope it's a good one. Wasn't sure if it was today or yesterday....Happy, fabulous year ahead too. NG |
| caitlinkelly | Posted 6/7/2008 10:20:51 PM | show profile NG, I left Saturday (today) at 3pm....and I can never get my *&^%$# cell messages when I am out of the U.S., so you were not being ignored...It would have been fun to hang out with you both. But I also really needed quiet downtime. The NatMags were fun and the birthday low-key but enjoyable... Next time... |
| Nikongirl | Posted 6/8/2008 12:18:08 AM | show profile Hey Caitlin, Sorry we missed you, I just got back from hanging out with VR and her sister. They came to my son's Cd release at a club on College. I hear you on needing down, quiet time. How's the shoulder healing? NG |
| caitlinkelly | Posted 6/8/2008 2:44:44 PM | show profile Really big news...I can now sleep on my right side for the first time in 5 weeks. So, shoulder is doing well. |
| ManhattanMatt | Posted 6/8/2008 10:37:11 PM | show profile Yeah ... Bleak Spouse is definitely a hottie. WOOF! ;) |
| voracious reader | Posted 6/9/2008 3:55:20 PM | show profile Finally back on Long Island after celebrating the FIRST, and hopefully, ONLY wedding of my 53 year old cousin in Toronto. Can't decide which was the highlight of my trip - visiting with my family or meeting Nikongirl and her great family! And folks, if you look at that picture of us, please ignore my smile! I'm undergoing MAJOR dental work, AGAIN! Anyway, NG, Toronto was great fun and you made it even more delightful. Sorry we missed you caitlinkelly! Til next time! |
| Mag Girl | Posted 6/9/2008 4:17:59 PM | show profile Caitlin- great about your shoulder! That sounds like real progress. |
