Back when I was in college, I remember being in the middle of a four-hour drive across rural Pennsylvania at 2am when I realized that I'd forgotten my purse. I only had about a quarter tank of gas left, so I couldn't turn back to retrieve it. It was about 10 degrees outside and snow was beginning to fall. I drove for about 45 more minutes and finally found an open gas station. I tried to give the cashier my credit card number to pay for gas. But since I didn't have any ID, she turned me away. I was tired and hungry and upset and alone and scared and I had no idea how I was going to get home. This was before cell phones. Not knowing what else to do, and being the big baby that I am, I started to cry. Low, muffled crying. But crying nonetheless. Out of the blue, a man walked up and asked me how much money it would take to fill my tank. He gave me that amount plus $5 extra to get coffee and a snack. It's the nicest thing a stranger's ever done for me. 3. Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of a stranger towards you? Yes. Happened all the time when I waited tables. 4. What do you feel compelled to do each day even though you don't really enjoy doing it? Make my bed. Brush my teeth. Go to my nightmare of a job. 5. If you believe in a higher power/god, what do imagine he/she/it looks like? I don't think it looks like anything anyone's ever seen before. But not scary. 6. In what ways are you a snob? Ghetto black people embarrass me. I don't like using cheap soap. 7. Have you ever gotten sick on an amusement park ride? Nope. 8. Have you ever taken a restraining order/order of protection out against a person? I almost did once, but that fool finally backed off. 9. Would you ever pose nude for a national publication? Sure, as long as I was positioned to hide my private parts. (Crossed legs, long hair covering breasts, etc.) The final picture would have to be airbrushed to death. But yeah, I'd do it. 10. How many people have told you they love you this week? My mom and my dad. ~Bonus Question~ If you viewed the photos in Bleak's "what the hell do you look like" thread, were you surprised at what your fellow MB posters look like? I stopped reading that thread after about 60 messages. It just got too long. But I remember thinking Righter was absolutely stunning. And JBE, you've got the bluest eyes I've ever seen. |

Could be 45 seconds, if working from home, sometimes it can take as long as 45 minutes if visiting a client. 2. Have you ever been blown away by the kindness of a stranger towards you? Like I said in a previous post, I was quite surprised when a stranger called me after I mentioned in a local paper that I loved the movie "Wuthering Heights," and she subsequently sent me a copy of the movie, along with some popcorn. 3. Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of a stranger towards you? Not towards me, but I've seen it done to others and I have found that shocking. 4. What do you feel compelled to do each day even though you don't really enjoy doing it? Answer the phone. If people want to reach me, I'm so much happier to do it in text. When the phone rings nowadays, it's usually some kind of garbage. And that includes the dentist's office calling to confirm a damn appointment! 5. If you believe in a higherpower/god, what do image he/she/it looks like? Darth Vader...really! 6. In what ways are you a snob? Me? That's hilarious! 7. Have you ever gotten sick on an amusement park ride? Great on roller coasters, awful on the carousel, go figure. 8. Have you ever taken a restraining order/order of protection out against a person? Nope. 9. Would you ever pose nude for a national publication? Absolutely, as long as Mario Testino is doing the shoot. 10. How many people have you told you they love you this week? Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of a stranger towards you? maybe not cruelty, but rudeness, yes. 4. What do you feel compelled to do each day even though you don't really enjoy doing it? get up in the morning! 5. If you believe in a higher power/god, what do imagine he/she/it looks like? I don't think god has a gender, a human form or anything. I sort of imagine a great big ball of light and energy. 6. In what ways are you a snob? I like really good cheese. If I see people order American cheese when better ones are available, my nose turns up a bit. 7. Have you ever gotten sick on an amusement park ride? No, but I don't do roller coasters - I am deathly afraid of heights. 8. Have you ever taken a restraining order/order of protection out against a person? no, thankfully. 9. Would you ever pose nude for a national publication? Hmm...maybe now that I'm newly skinny! Ha. But they'd have to pay me a CRAPLOAD of money and be really artfully done. And then I'd still worry that my redneck family would pick up the mag and see me. 10. How many people have told you they love you this week? Husband, mom, stepfather, brother. For some, yes! You are a good-looking bunch. I have to say I was struck by Nikon - you're much different looking than I imagined! ANd JBE, I was imagining you with darker hair. Well, I guess when the guy bit me in the ass, it is the only time a stranger did something that was in any way cruel, it was also physically painful for days. 4. What do you feel compelled to do each day even though you don't really enjoy doing it? Can't think of anything, I pretty much enjoy my days. 5. If you believe in a higher power/god, what do imagine he/she/it looks like? Good question, have not really considered a specific look. 6. In what ways are you a snob? Shamefully several. Well maybe more than several. 7. Have you ever gotten sick on an amusement park ride? When I was 14 after a last of summer binge, did all the rides but it was the centrifugal force ride that did me in. 8. Have you ever taken a restraining order/order of protection out against a person? No but should have a couple of times. One of them has been locked up in a maximum security prison for the criminally insane since the 70's. 9. Would you ever pose nude for a national publication? Nope. Not even when I was young and buff. 10. How many people have told you they love you this week? Several. ~Bonus Question~ If you viewed the photos in Bleak's "what the hell do you look like" thread, were you surprised at what your fellow MB posters look like? Yes, some for sure, for instance, I always pictured you Janet as a curly brown haired woman, a little dishevelled and tough and you look anything but. I also pictured The Donna Change a.k.a. Sue Ellen as a black haired beauty in the vein of Uma Thurmon in Pulp Fiction. Keltoi looks as sweet as I always pictured him and many of the others were just a lovely surprise, I LOVED seeing everyone's pictures. As a photographer, I find everyone looks good in the lens, even those who do not think they are photogenic. |

Have you ever been blown away by the kindness of a stranger towards you? I blew out my ACL in my knee on a skiing trip in Jackson Hole. I was in a hip-to-ankle brace and had a really hard time navigating the stairs of the hotel. As I was limping down a set of stairs, a man came up behind me and literally picked me up and carried me down two flights. I've never forgotten that and it was years ago. 3. Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of a stranger towards you? Yes. It involved a cashier at Rite-Aid and I don't like thinking about it. 4. What do you feel compelled to do each day even though you don't really enjoy doing it? I have to read Page Six even though I find it a colossal waste of time. 5. If you believe in a higher power/god, what do imagine he/she/it looks like? When I was a kid, I thought god was a man with flowing white hair and robes. I now believe more in a univeral energy that is a flowing blue stream constantly beside me. 6. In what ways are you a snob? I really enjoy my over-priced German car. 7. Have you ever gotten sick on an amusement park ride? I hyperventilated on a ride a Great Adventure and the ride attendants had to help me off when it was over. My hands had completely clawed up from the build up of carbon dioxide in my blood and I couldn't move them. I thought I was dying. 8. Have you ever taken a restraining order/order of protection out against a person? No, but I probably should have. After having two stalkers in as many months, I take these things seriously now. 9. Would you ever pose nude for a national publication? If Consumer Reports ever runs a nude pictorial, I'd like to be posed on top of a washing machine. I love spin cycles. 10. How many people have told you they love you this week? A few months ago, I wound up taking the wrong subway train, ended up in Spanish Harlem, late for an assignment, weeping. Once in a cab, I realized I only had a few dollars and told the driver to just stop, but he said "Don't worry about it," and took me anyway. I think it is not neccessarily how big the act is, but how much it means to the person recieving it. 3. Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of a stranger towards you? When I worked in telemarketing in college, I was surprised how many people would scream at me, berate me, call me names. Why not just hang up on me? It seemed so pointless. 4. What do you feel compelled to do each day even though you don't really enjoy doing it? Brush my teeth. Ick, I know. Some days I don't feel like eating even though I can tell my blood sugar is plummeting. 5. If you believe in a higher power/god, what do imagine he/she/it looks like? Flowing robes, long white hair, the whole bit. He's got His head in His hands and he's saying, "NO NO NO I said Thou Shalt NOT kill! Love Thy neighbor. What the hell is wrong with you people???" 6. In what ways are you a snob? I only like whole milk, real butter, incandescent lights. I loathe chain restauraunts. 7. Have you ever gotten sick on an amusement park ride? How many people have told you they love you this week? Husband, mom and dad. The best was my kid. I have to say I was surprised at how good looking everyone was. Writers get a bad rap for being a bit homely, I think. I thought JBE would be a brunette, that Nikon would be about 25 (she was so edgy and funny with that whole NP dustup.) I also thought Keltoi would look older - I can't believe those girls are his grandkids! Bleak actually didn't surprise me at all - I kind of expected him to be a scruffy hipster. I remember, I think it was Ugogirl - the one with the funny sandwich board - looked like one of those Sex in the City girls. Now who else? mkelly? foto? groove? C'mon guys! |

Then it's a 45 minute train ride. 2. Have you ever been blown away by the kindness of a stranger towards you? Yes, many times. Once, after a horrific car accident, a woman sprinted across a four lane freeway to get to me trapped inside my car. She was so kind and consoling, and she really risked her life to come help me. While traveling on my own with babies, I can't tell you how many strangers were wonderful and assisted me often. One really Bleak-type hot guy that sat next to me on the plane helped console the baby for me a few times, would get up and grab the diaper bag from the overhead for me, and carried my bags off of the plane. 3. Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of strangers? Oh yeah, many times. Funny, most of the worst of it happened when I lived in So. Cal. 4. What do you feel compelled to do each day even though you don't really enjoy doing it? The yoga and the arm weights. Doing laundry, loading the dishwasher. 5. If you believe in a higher power/god, what do imagine he/she/it looks like? I figured the flowing robe, platinum beard image as a kid. Now, I think it's more like energy. 6. Without batting an eye, this silver-haired superhero next to me grabbed him by the side of the head and threw him up against the subway car, snarling, "You do NOT touch women like that." And before I could thank him, he was gone! 3. Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of a stranger towards you? Sure, all the time on the subway. People are rude beyond belief. 4. What do you feel compelled to do each day even though you don't really enjoy doing it? Clean the entire kitchen, wash my puppy's bowls and water bottle, wipe down her crate, replace her cushion with a clean one, and let her lose to mess it all up again. 5. I think I actually expected Sue Ellen to *look* like my idea of Donna Chang from Seinfeld before the actual actress was revealed. I also thought Bleak woud be an old, grumpy curmudgeon, and that JBE would be more "average" and not quite as glamorous as she really is. But I only checked out a few photos because (a) the length of the thread was becoming intimidating, and (b) I doubted that I would participate, and I didn't think it was fair to play without paying. :-) |

I recently published an essay in the NYT, in which I thanked the much older neighbor I barely knew who made me a sandwich in 1994 after my husband walked out and I had not eaten in a week. Couldn't do it. She took me to her apartment, made me a sandwich and kindly said I could not leave until I ate. "Must've been some sandwich" she said this week. It was, to me. 3. A few times. Some people have major demons and seem to see your face on them. 4. Floss. Drink lots of water. 5. There are so many versions... I wonder. 6. A few. I totally do not understand people who judge others by the size of their home/schooling/kids's schooling, etc...that whole level of external social triage makes me vomit, so I am a snob about people who are snobs. I'm not wild about nude pantyhose and pre-packaged/heavily hyped anything, from food to travel and entertainment. 7. I avoid roller coasters, so no. 8. No. 9. With fab lighting and, yes Mario Testino, some of the better bits....maybe. 10. Two. BQ: I was really struck by how attractive everyone was. Not just ho-hum good-looking but really attractive. It make me curious about the co-relation (if any) between that and what attracts them/us to RTQs. |

Last night I was lugging grocery bags on the bus and the guy behind me paid my fare so I didn't have to fish out my card. Totally sweet. 3. Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of a stranger towards you? Yes. Those people will get theirs. Karma is a bitch. 4. What do you feel compelled to do each day even though you don't really enjoy doing it? Dishes, clean in general. 5. If you believe in a higher power/god, what do imagine he/she/it looks like? Just like in the bible ... he has a beard, white robe, sandals, etc. 6. In what ways are you a snob? I am really snobby about where I live. I would never live in the ghetto, no matter how good of a deal it is. I like my neighbors rich, my hood clean and my parks without riffraff. 7. Have you ever gotten sick on an amusement park ride? The boat one always makes my stomach turn, but never actually tossed my cookies on one. 8. Have you ever taken a restraining order/order of protection out against a person? No, thank God. 9. Once, years ago, when I was out of work and going to tons of interviews with no luck, I was taking the LIRR into Manhattan for yet another one. A man sat down next to me and started to talk about life in general and I started to cry. He handed me a handkerchief and then doled out some of the kindest support I ever received. I never got to really thank him -- especially since the interview I went on that day produced a job which eventually sent me out to L.A., where life really opened up for me. 3. Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of a stranger towards you? Sure. Haven't we all? How sad that people take their anger and frustrations out on others. 4. What do you feel compelled to do each day even though you don't really enjoy doing it? Make the bed, clean the litter box, do the laundry., Although, I don't do laundry every day. 5. If you believe in a higher power/god, what do imagine he/she/it looks like? I imagine a huge presence of white light that eminates peace and love. 6. In what ways are you a snob? Oh, I think the sun rises and sets on NY. Only other place I would ever live is CA. 7. Have you ever gotten sick on an amusement park ride? No. I don't go on them for that very reason. 8. Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of a stranger towards you? Yes. I was once randomly called racist in a Washington DC subway station when I was interning there for a summer. 4. In what ways are you a snob? I'm a snob about my ancestors (one helped found Salem, Massachussetts, several others helped build the Erie Canal, and countless others have participated in every single major American War. Have you ever been blown away by the kindness of a stranger towards you? Yes...two older couples in London literally grabbed my oversized suitcase on the Tube and walked me to my friend's flat; last week in Dallas I was amazed at how many shopkeepers would not just give me directions to my next destination but also mapquest it, print out directions, and call ahead to confirm the location. 3. Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of a stranger towards you? This lady kicked me in the shins while I was exiting the NYC subway once. I was so stunned I almost laughed. 4. What do you feel compelled to do each day even though you don't really enjoy doing it? Change out of my pajamas, cook. 5. If you believe in a higher power/god, what do imagine he/she/it looks like? Old, fatherly figure I suppose. 6. In what ways are you a snob? when i go to the mall - which i have learned to stop doing. also, when people tell me they like dane cook. 7. In what ways are you a snob? --I like certain brands and will not buy substitutes. 7. Have you ever gotten sick on an amusement park ride? --No, but I've been gotten sick ON by someone else on an amusement ride. It was not amusing. 8. The owner of a shop around the corner from my new apartment let me take a nap in his back storage room until I was strong enough to walk up 3 flights of stairs to my apartment. 3) yes--bitchy teen girls of a different race trying to intimidate me before a 6th-grade talent show and a high-school foreign-language competition. 4) reading mediabistro's blogs 5) n/a 6) culture snob in relation to my parents and most of the folks with whom I grew up. 7) no, but had to nervously brace my legs on The Enterprise so that I'd stop slipping around. 8) no 9) no 10) none Bonus: I was surprised by some people's looks, especially Bleak. He's HOT, and much younger than I thought. |

Yes. Especially when my preemie son was in neonatal ICU. He got donated breast milk. Also when a son was in a body cast -- so many kindnesses. 3. Have you ever been blown away by the cruelty of a stranger towards you? Yes. A bureaucrat, on more than one occasion. 4. How long is your commute? depends. i go from atlantic center in brooklyn to grand central terminal in manhattan. sometimes it's 20 minutes and other times it's 1.25 hours. 2.
