huh?
so let me get this straight- you need a web design but want to have your PRINTER do the work? sounds a bit odd to me~

if i were you I would post something on craigslist or a reputable freelance web site expressing your needs and then look at your responses and budget and start from there.

Hey Donna:
I have a guy that I used to write copy for who is a talented web designer. He just started his own firm, and his rates right now are very reasonable and he has a great background. If you are interested, I'll give you his contact info and you can talk to him and see if he's a good fit.

I'm using him right now for an organic food company, and I couldn't be happier with his work. His fast, efficient, and well priced.

Oh, I thought I should mention that it isn't all that uncommon that a printer could possibly have the skills to be an excellent web designer. The designer I mentioned worked for a printer before he started his own firm.

And Craigslist? She'll get about 9,000 emails from unqualified people. Who has the time to pore over every email to find the one diamond in a sea of zirconias?

Some of the largest print companies are now starting web design services utilizing the current page configurations and access to PDF images. Your pricing may well be more competitive because your printer has the artwork, scans and files already at their disposal

No not really - 2 different worlds...
I have a FAQ on my website that answers this question.

In short, probably not a good idea. Print is a different world from web, and one needs to be well versed in the web-specific issues.

MTC. That is utterly not true. As I said some of the larger printing companies have invested in web design, ebook design departments offering pod casts, streaming video and yes professional design services. It makes sense because the printer already has access to scans artwork and PDF files. The whole process becomes streamlined. You sound as if a printing company is unable to hire talented web designers specializing in publication and catalog work, that's just not the case.

Jack of all Trades/master of none
I'm sure some big print conglomerates hire experts, but most don't. Here's an off-beat suggestion: join the wise women group and find a freelance web designer. These women are cutting edge techs in web design and responsible for the work they do. Here's the elist connection; there's about 50 women worldwide that you can pick and choose from.
Subscription and list info: http://www.wise-women.org/about/join

Entrepreneurs are more likely to be personally involved with your work as opposed to delegating you to hired hands. Good luck.
