Hello. I was curious if there were any classes or books on how to write a good newsletter. I'm applying for a job that includes writing a newsletter. I have written them in previous jobs but without specific training except for my English degree. I have browsed in Borders, too, but I haven't seen anything devoted solely to newsletters. Thanks in advance! =)

The main thing with writing a "good" newsletter is knowing your audience and making the copy relevant to their needs.

When I started writing them, I researched larger and respected organizations in the same genre of my company, and signed up for their online newsletters and followed the pattern of commonality. Once I was more comfortable, my instincts kicked in and I was better able to ask myself what the readers really wanted and needed to know about my client.

Of course, what the previous poster said about knowing what your audience is most interested in is the core. For one non-profit that I now write newsletters for, I spent a lot of time looking at what subscribers clicked on the most, and what they responded to the most. I was surprised by how much people really wanted to know about the personal lives of the employees, and how much they responded to making things a little more personal with a little less corporate speak.

Thx for your input! That is pretty much what I did in the past with newsletters.
