Today I called my lardlord to talk about possibly moving out of my apartment when the lease comes due in August.

At the end of the conversation, he said to me, "I haven't received your rent for this month."

Me (feeling foolish and embarrassed): Really? I mailed it a week and a half ago.

Him: Well, we just haven't gotten it yet. Don't let this happen again.

So a very puzzled me went online to look at my bank statement. It turns out that Check Number X, in the amount of my rent, was paid, and cleared, on Monday.

What is it with these New York landlords?

is it possible the check got intercepted and cashed fraudulently by someone else?

If he has multiple tenants, he may have confused you with another. Or if someone else handled the deposit, he may have not been updated.

And the other poster's right -- it could have been swiped.

Or he could have just been messing with your head on account of you planning to move -- although this isn't that likely.

I'd definitely call to let him know you know it cleared, and ask him to check on his end.

I'd say: get a printout of the bank statement, and show it to him, either personally, or by fax. Do it in a friendly way. You've already got one paranoid new yorker in the mix; stay positive.

Or...he was hoping to get paid twice. I've had more than one supplier call me and mention that they hadn't been paid (when they had), hoping that I wouldn't investigate it and just write them another check. The world's full of scumbags, both large and small.

Update--

It turns out that my landlord fired his accounting person two weeks ago and then fired a forensic accountant, who found some "inconsistencies" in the company's banking. Apparently, my rent check for FEBRUARY hasn't been cashed yet!

Still, thanks for the suggestions!
