| mad fingers | Posted 6/6/2008 9:37:17 AM | show profile I do have the cosmic "Sucker" sign on my forehead. Found him yesterday. He was wearing a collar, flea collar and dragging one of those temporary leashes like you get at a shelter or vet. Looks like he was just shaved for summer. Have posted on craigslist, petfinder and fidofind, but just wondering what else I should be doing. Don't really want to involve the local Animal Control people. It's a kill shelter and they are very strict about enforcing rules (think pet Nazis). On the other hand, if someone goes there looking for this sweet boy, I'd like them to be able to get my contact info. Ideas? Thanks! |
| catlondon | Posted 6/6/2008 10:14:34 AM | show profile Call the local humane society and see if they can help you out. At the very least, they should be able to see if he's microchipped and should be able to read the info if he is. And any pet related businesses in the area will post flyers. The problem with keeping it internet based is that an elderly owner may not have a computer or know how to search the proper sites. Good luck! Hope it has a happy ending. |
| Righter | Posted 6/6/2008 10:34:35 AM | show profile Also, if posting at local stores still doesn't help find the owner, try taking him to a rescue group instead of animal services. These are private non-profit, no-kill orgs and (at least the ones in my town) will either foster the dog in a volunteer's home until it finds a permanent one or keep it in a kennel. They'll also make sure the dog gets any medical attention it may need. |
| DQ102 | Posted 6/6/2008 10:51:54 AM | show profile You are not a sucker. You are a nice person. My friend found a dog on the street a few months ago, and it was clear that this dog belonged to someone and had someone gotten out of the yard, so she took him home and called the veterinarian offices in the area to see if anyone had reported a dog matching this dog's description missing. She also called the local SPCA to let them know she had the dog in case the owner called. Turns out one of the vet offices she called did know the owner, and the woman came to her house a couple of days later to pick up the dog. She and her son were so thrilled that my friend held onto the little guy. So maybe call some vet offices and give them a description of the dog, call your local SPCA and put up signs all over the neighborhood where you found the dog. Like a previous poster said, if this dog belongs to an older person, they might not think to go on the Internet. Good luck, and let us know if you reunited the pooch with his owner. You are a nice person! |
| Mag Girl | Posted 6/6/2008 11:26:30 AM | show profile newspapers let you put in free "found" animal ads too. Definitely do that. Any any local vet can scan for a microchip too- most have the equipment these days. |
| jjones | Posted 6/6/2008 11:59:10 AM | show profile Where are you? What kind of dog is it? In my area (Park Slope, Brooklyn), someone just posted about a lost dog... 6/3/08 Black and white Pitbull, 45 lbs., 3 years old. "Mama" > disappeared during morning off-leash time in Prospect Park, Tuesday, June > 3rd, near 11th Street. Contact: Matthew 917-595-7129 with any > information. |
| mad fingers | Posted 6/6/2008 3:38:24 PM | show profile No, I'm just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Just don't understand why people don't get ID tags for their pets. Not sure how, but I'm going to somehow scrape together the funds to get mine micro-chipped. I don't ever want to be on the other side of this equation. Got a hit off craigslist from someone who thinks he may know the dog from his neighborhood. Fingers crossed. Off to hang posters and call local vets. |
| mad fingers | Posted 6/19/2008 6:14:17 PM | show profile Update on found dog Well, the good news was that while no one ever claimed him, I found a great couple who were willing to give him a permanent home, pending a vet check and seeing if he got along with their cats. The bad news: Just got back from the vet. "Zenda" tested positive for heart worm. I seriously doubt the couple will want to take this on. It's a lot more than they bargained for emotionally (having recently lost a beloved dog) and financially. I can't afford the treatment for him, and most likely, if he goes to a shelter, he'll be put down. I am totally devastated. |
| beenthere | Posted 6/19/2008 7:30:50 PM | show profile Go to a no kill shelter Here's a list of no-kill shelters. http://www.nokillnetwork.org/d/North-Carolina They will take him and get him adoption-ready. I got my two cats from a no-kill and both were fixed, healthy, and up-to-date with shots. They may also offer low-cost vet care, so the couple you found for his adoption may be able to afford him. It can't hurt to ask, if you explain the situation. |
| HisGirlFriday | Posted 6/20/2008 12:37:57 AM | show profile Mad; How much is heartworm treatment? I'll send you $40 for it .... (coming from someone who just found a home for a ringworm infected stray cat) |
| catlondon | Posted 6/20/2008 11:55:08 AM | show profile Yup. Me too. I'll kick in for treatment. |
| mad fingers | Posted 6/20/2008 11:56:26 AM | show profile I have already, with the help of friends, collected almost $300. That's about half. I will try to set up a fund with the vet later today. I am determined to see Zenda through this and find him a good home. He deserves it. He is such a good boy! |
| paludi1 | Posted 6/20/2008 12:42:50 PM | show profile M.F.--since you said he was recently shaved, did you try e-mailing a picture of him to any of the dog grooming establishments? I think most people have their dog groomed at a groomer as opposed to DIY, so maybe there could be some possibilities there. Anyway, cheers to you for looking after him. |
| wineaux | Posted 6/20/2008 12:43:04 PM | show profile I'll kick in too. Just let us know who the vet is and those interested can send a donation directly. |
| mad fingers | Posted 6/20/2008 12:57:41 PM | show profile The vet will not take a check or PayPal. They are very low-tech on that end (as is a lot of the area where I live). Will have to figure something else out. Maybe one of the non-profits can take donations for him and pass them along to the vet. That's my next call. |
| beenthere | Posted 6/20/2008 1:36:01 PM | show profile Call a shelter Please call a shelter and see if they offer vet services or services for those in need. The $300 you already have might be enough for the dog's care. Shelters are having more than enough trouble placing pets these days and faced with a please treat him/here's a $300 donation versus here's another animal for you to place, they will probably cut you a deal. |
| mad fingers | Posted 6/20/2008 6:11:11 PM | show profile Thanks so much to all of you for your support. What a difference a day can make. Just via word of mouth and email, we have raised nearly enough for Zenda's entire treatment with enough left over to get him neutered. There is a no-kill shelter in Charlotte that may be able to take him if it comes to that, but if he can pass "the cat compatible test," I'm pretty sure the people I'd hoped to place him with originally will still want him. |
| mad fingers | Posted 6/20/2008 6:19:24 PM | show profile Zenda (& the pic of Hoagy and me from WTH do you look like) http://www.flickr.com/photos/26942889@N08/?saved=1 |
| beenthere | Posted 6/20/2008 6:19:30 PM | show profile I was suggesting calling the shelter because treatment might have been a lot cheaper through a shelter than going through a traditional -- for profit -- veterinarian. Cost seemed to be a factor, but apparently is not anymore. |
| mae | Posted 6/20/2008 6:29:02 PM | show profile What a sweet puppy! You did a good thing. |
| DQ102 | Posted 6/20/2008 8:11:03 PM | show profile I just read this thread and saw the pictures. What a gorgeous dog. He is so lucky that you found him! |
| HisGirlFriday | Posted 6/20/2008 9:43:42 PM | show profile Hurrah! He is a cutie - I love his pointy ears! Do let us know who the vet is if you fall short on funds - I can't imagine they'd turn down money orders, right? |
| wineaux | Posted 6/20/2008 11:08:42 PM | show profile Aw mad, he's very cute. And, I love your pup, too. Let us know if you need any additional assistance. |
| df | Posted 6/21/2008 10:54:37 AM | show profile I just had time to read this - please let us know if the funds fall short, I certainly will chip in. what a cute dog! her people must miss zelda. did you try vets in your city? is there a network? my dog used to break free and run after rabbits etc (she had an id tag, a little closed bullet on her collar, which brought the unruly beagle bag many times) but every time she was gone it would break my heart. So I assume zeldas family is heartbroken and still looking. And no you don't have looser on your forehead animals are good judges of character and seek out the 'good apples' when in dire need for help. Its not a bad thing its a badge of honor. |
| Canadiana | Posted 6/21/2008 2:46:57 PM | show profile I think you are a lovely person and you've got loads of good karma coming your way. Best of luck to you and the pup. |
