| jseconds77 | Posted 6/9/2008 5:28:26 PM | show profile this is not only for beginners... can everyone who reads this respond properly..... Online ads for journalism jobs almost always state no phone calls, faxes, etc. So, how does one check their application process? Also, has ANY ONE gotten a job by applying via online...www.journalismjobs.com careerbuilder.com etc. etc. because if you cannot even call to confirm an app. how are you able to know what the hell is going on? |
| xpress | Posted 6/9/2008 5:50:49 PM | show profile all my jobs I got were found online on journalismjobs or mediabistro. If you are the right fit, they'll call you. |
| WordyBird | Posted 6/9/2008 6:13:13 PM | show profile Either return to the site from whence you applied or go to the company's website and write to your contact there, thusly: Dear _____: I recently applied for your ______ opening, and I just wanted to follow up to make sure you received my résumé. My strong background in ______, ______ and ______ appears to be an excellent match to the qualifications you are seeking, and I am very interested in your opportunity. I realize you may not yet be at the interview stage, but I am more than happy to answer any preliminary questions you may have, and I can be reached at (XXX) XXX-XXXX. Thank you for your time and kind consideration. Sincerely, That came directly from Monster, by the way. I did get a job through MB, the job I took when I moved up here. Interviewing for one through another site tomorrow (a site geared toward non-profits, because that's just my thing). |
| Scottie | Posted 6/9/2008 7:00:29 PM | show profile Never rely on them to call you. CVs fall under the desk. Computer programs wil screen you out for completely arbitrary reasons. Do some research and find out who the hiring manager is and then e-mail your CV and cover letter. Phone to follow up. Ignore the "Don't Call us, we'll call you" stuff. It's boilerplate HR. Journalists are supposed to be able to get through to the right people and arrange to talk to them. |
| dribbledrive1 | Posted 6/9/2008 8:15:07 PM | show profile I've gotten gigs off these sites. My expectation is much more often than not, my material will drop into a great void and I will never get a response. I just email my material and forget about it and move on. If they call, they call. I don't think there is much of a point of trying to check the application process if you have just responded to ad but gotten no personal response from the company. |
| HisGirlFriday | Posted 6/9/2008 9:29:07 PM | show profile I've gotten two freelance gigs from journalismjobs.com. Responded to the ad with an email with a few sentences explaining why I'm right for the job, attached resume and clips, got a call. Both gigs have led to multiple assignments at pretty good $. If I responded to an ad and did not hear back within a few weeks, I probably would try to follow up with the pub either via email or phone if I was really pumped about the job. If not, I'd assume that they were just not that into me. |
| joyeuxnoelle | Posted 6/12/2008 12:50:47 PM | show profile | email poster So ... if you apply for a job on Monster, then spot it on mb, do you apply twice? |
| Grateful Deadline | Posted 6/12/2008 3:53:56 PM | show profile And the purpose of two applications for the same job would be ... to show you can't remember that you already applied? |
| Agirlwalksintoabookstore... | Posted 6/12/2008 4:39:32 PM | show profile Ditto on what Grateful Deadline said. If you see a post listed on two different websites, say, "I'm applying for the _____ position, which I saw listed on _____ and _____." Doing that shows that you've done your homework and are covering your bases. Applying twice just makes you look flaky. |
| joyeuxnoelle | Posted 6/12/2008 8:08:07 PM | show profile I saw a job on a non major jobsite a few weeks ago. As directed, I sent my info to the general hr email address. No reply. Then, last night I see the job posted on a major site. I've convinced myself already that I am the perfect candidate. I responded to each requirement point by point. When I didn't hear anything I just assumed that the position had been filled. But now that it hasn't, I feel obligated to apply again. Maybe my first application got stuck in somebody's spam folder or something. |
| jseconds77 | Posted 6/12/2008 8:15:26 PM | show profile reply with a faker e-mail to gauge the situation. speaking of checking out situations, I applied for a gig for the hell of it...just to see, wound up getting it. |
