| DQ102 | Posted 6/10/2008 11:15:29 AM | show profile Can anyone recommend some good places to sit and write in the East Village? I used to go to Rapture Cafe on Avenue A from time to time, but it shut down recently. I am looking for free Wi-Fi and a place that doesn't mind me hanging out for awhile. A place to plug in my laptop would be a bonus. |
| wineaux | Posted 6/10/2008 11:23:02 AM | show profile Check out www.Ilovefreewifi.com They have customer reviews of the places listed, too, which is great. The posts often discuss how fast (or slow) the connections tend to be, whether there are a decent amount of plugs, or if the place is too loud to get real work done. |
| DQ102 | Posted 6/10/2008 11:28:36 AM | show profile Thanks. I will check it out. I think air conditioning will also be a requirement if I go somewhere today! |
| Mirage | Posted 6/10/2008 12:03:03 PM | show profile Not sure if you want to venture further out, but there are a million places in the Village that are great for writing. Many of the coffee shops and restaurants near NYU allow this sort of thing all the time, and you don't need to be a student. |
| DQ102 | Posted 6/10/2008 12:11:45 PM | show profile I was going to ask if anyone also knew of places in the West Village because I am willing to take the stroll. If you have any place specific to recommend, let me know. I really feel like I need to start getting out of the apartment more. |
| Village Gal | Posted 6/10/2008 12:43:28 PM | show profile in the West Village very popular place to write is S'Nice on Eighth Ave, near Horatio St. Has good vegetarian food too. |
| Village Gal | Posted 6/10/2008 12:46:34 PM | show profile ooops. looks like S' Nice just cancelled their wireless |
| Mirage | Posted 6/10/2008 3:44:14 PM | show profile Aroma on Houston has free wifi. (I can't stand their coffee, but they have sandwiches and stuff, too.) Ditto Think, which I believe is on Mercer (a few blocks north of the Angelika). Regular food -- Soy Luck Club on Jane St., and one of the restaurants on Bleecker at MacDougal as you walk up from 6th. (Sorry, I forget the name, but they're great with letting you sit all afternoon using their wifi.) On cooler days, you should be able to get wifi in Wash Sq Park. Not sure if you'd need a password, though. |
| Mirage | Posted 6/10/2008 3:48:27 PM | show profile Oh, and Les Halles Downtown (on John Street) supposedly has free wifi, too, but I haven't checked it out myself. |
| seeattleme2 | Posted 6/10/2008 8:14:13 PM | show profile Joes bar on east 5th or 6th, I forget. Bring your own laptop, but cool place and cheap beer. Also Dublin Room on W 79th. |
| ManhattanMatt | Posted 6/10/2008 9:03:20 PM | show profile Doesn't anyone ... ...write at HOME anymore? |
| DQ102 | Posted 6/10/2008 9:43:29 PM | show profile I do most of my writing at home, but then I did start to make myself go out once or twice a week for a few hours to work on smaller items at a cafe or coffee shop. I have to do the bulk of my writing at home because I need to focus. Plus, I have to be at home most of the time because I do several interviews a week and need to be by the phone. But I do get cabin fever, especially when the weather gets nice, and find it a nice break just to get out and be around other people for a few hours in the afternoon. |
| kaceclosed | Posted 6/11/2008 12:47:11 AM | show profile B CUp On Ave B and 12th is AMAZING?free Wifi, superfriendly employees, AWESOME coffee and great salads, plus plenty of places to sit AND outlets (important!) I'm almost loathe to post this, because I love it so much and don't want it to get crowded (which it does on weekends, but evenings and weekdays it's awesome) |
| Village Gal | Posted 6/11/2008 11:49:17 AM | show profile I do all my writing at home unless I'm out of town. |
| newbie | Posted 6/11/2008 7:35:55 PM | show profile What about Gramercy? I'm camping at my boyfriend's due to the heat (and his 2 air conditioners!)... Still, I think he's a little weirded out finding me sprawled on the couch each night when he gets home. Any suggestions for the Gramercy Park area? |
| wineaux | Posted 6/11/2008 11:55:18 PM | show profile I have to say that I don't know how anyone gets work done at coffee shops/cafes. The husband begged me to come w/ him to a cool local shop on a cold winter morning, and I obliged, only to be totally and completely irritated by every single person in the shop. All I was doing was writing some really simple marketing materials, so I figured I didn't need total and complete silence. But, it was really distracting. A group of about 7 people next to us were having a sales meeting, and one overly zealous manager had one of those raspy, cigarette voices, which she used with varying gusto. A mother was having coffee with another woman, and while the two of them giggled away, her toddler ran all over the room, shrieking and climbing up and down chairs. Even the toilet flushing sounded like Niagra Falls. I haven't tried to write outside of my home office since. I mostly just have meetings or interviews in public places and keep the writing to the confines of my tiny, but quiet cave. |
| writesonwater | Posted 6/22/2008 2:24:33 AM | show profile | email poster I have done some writing at a coffee shop, but in a city where I was anonymous. When I was on deadline in NYC for a newspaper while covering an event there, I was far from my hotel where I'd been writing and modeming. Someone nice at AP let me in, where I wrote and then modemed my stuff. |
