Topic: Internships and career advice

It was full-time, paid, and the work was unusual--I did much more than just read submissions, write reader's reports, and perform administrative tasks. While I was there, I got the feeling that my work there was appreciated. At the end of the internship, I sat down with my boss and had a long talk with her about my performance in the internship, as well as my career goals. She was very understanding and complimentary of the work I had done for them, but for someone who'd worked in all aspects of publishing, she'd given me very little advice or support. Even when I asked her if she could give me the names of some people in the industry I could talk to, she was retiscent (sp). Since then, I've been job hunting and temping. So I'm basically in the same boat as a lof of people on these boards. Essentially, my question is this: how much is an employer obligated or not obligated to give career advice and give you referrals to other professonals in the industry, when its an internship? |
