Have you ever witnessed "what goes around comes around" in action? Yes...my last job...The Ginger (SP reference) got dumped at the altar. 4. In what ways are you parsimonious? I work in the luxury goods sector, and yet, I refuse to buy anything my company sells because it is excessive and useless. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? Yes... 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? Yes...Anne Bartlett. She taught me how to deconstruct and dismantle the institutionalism. 7. What is the most ironic thing that has happened to you recently? Hmmm...nothing. Irony is dead. 8. Has someone ever saved your life, either figuratively or literally? Yes. 9. What is your biggest time waster? Checking my e-mail... 10. At this moment, how many people are you mad at? Zero... ~Bonus Question~ Do you ever blow your nose while in the shower? Never... |
| nandy | Posted 6/11/2008 10:15:06 PM | show profile 1. How often per day do you feel ugly? -- At least once. My current physical state is less than optimal and due to get worse in July. 2. Have you ever sucked the toes of another person? -- Only my babies. 3. Have you ever witnessed "what goes around comes around" in action? -- Oh yeah. But I don't believe it's a cosmic return, because I've seen some very good people get shafted, and some not very nice people win the prize. 4. In what ways are you parsimonious? -- I used to clip coupons until the manufacturers started putting very short expiration dates on them. Now I just look for the best buy comparing the cost per ounce/pound/whatever. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? -- well there are few that have let me down, but I'm not ashamed of them for that. 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? -- Yes, but only because I didn't like them. I dropped their class and ended up in something I liked so much more, and that was more related to what I ended up doing in life. 7. What is the most ironic thing that has happened to you recently? -- pass 8. Has someone ever saved your life, either figuratively or literally? -- well there have people who stopped me from stepping into the street at the wrong time. 9. What is your biggest time waster? -- playing solitaire on my cell phone or computer 10. At this moment, how many people are you mad at? -- Two-my brother and my father. Both want me to "remove" things from our porch (which only gets seasonal use) that have been stored there for a long time. They're not unattractive; they just want to make room for other junk my brothers have moved into the house. But they have no suggestions for someplace else to move my things. I think they're being unreasonable. I've already gotten rid of or offered to put in our garage sale many things/pieces of furniture. I think it's time for my brothers to start unloading some of their stuff. Anyway my father and my brother are making unilateral decisions about my things that I am upset over. ~Bonus Question~ Do you ever blow your nose while in the shower? -- Sure. All the time. |
| pamelabeth | Posted 6/11/2008 11:17:52 PM | show profile 1. How often per day do you feel ugly? too many, right now. looking forward to getting my hair back...! 2. Have you ever sucked the toes of another person? no. but i have kissed feet (of babies and little kids). 3. Have you ever witnessed "what goes around comes around" in action? not as much as i would like. 4. In what ways are you parsimonious? buy lots of clothes at vintage or thrift stores, or get them free at clothing swaps (in exchange for what i'm no longer wearing). then again, with the emphasis on "lots of," maybe i'm not really saving. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? no 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? yeah, a few. peggy montgomery, for one--h.s. english teacher and mentor. 7. What is the most ironic thing that has happened to you recently? found myself surrounded by white hipsters in the 9th ward of new orleans. is that ironic? 8. Has someone ever saved your life, either figuratively or literally? figuratively, i'd say a few people have. literally, i think i saved my own life through a breast self-exam. 9. What is your biggest time waster? oh, too many. email...web surfing...?! 10. At this moment, how many people are you mad at? at least 3. ~Bonus Question~ Do you ever blow your nose while in the shower? sometimes i do. p.s. did anyone read my question from the last rtq? (i came in late, i realize.) the question was/is: if i use the plastic bags i get at grocery stores as garbage bags, is that as good as not taking them? ie, if i didn't take them, wouldn't i then have to buy plastic garbage bags, and would that really be better, plastic-wise? |
| wineaux | Posted 6/11/2008 11:46:37 PM | show profile 1. How often per day do you feel ugly? I don't feel truly ugly very often, unless I am extremely tired or stressed. It's more of a worry that I need to lose weight. I'm working on that, however, and making progress by busting my arse (finally) at the gym. 2. Have you ever sucked the toes of another person? Yes. 3. Have you ever witnessed "what goes around comes around" in action? As of late, quite often. I am ashamed to say that it has been extremely gratifying, which shows I can be very mean spirited to those who have offended me one way or another over the years.. 4. In what ways are you parsimonious? I rarely pay full price for clothing. It disgusts me how much is charged for simple articles of clothing. (Shoes and bags are another story, however). I'm all about getting things for less in that arena. I love to bargain hunt and get creative. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? The stomache and thighs. However, as I mentioned earlier, I am working on it. My body is starting to change. 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? My senior english teacher. He inspired me to delve into classic literature, and made it fun. He looked a lot like Hemingway, which I thought made his lessons even more intriguing and put up with very little crap from any of the students. I really respected him, which didn't happen too often in my early academic career. 7. What is the most ironic thing that has happened to you recently? Took on a gig that I thought would get me out of the house more, but it looks like I'm actually going to be spending a great deal of time by myself in the initial process, and doing everything in my lonely home office. 8. Has someone ever saved your life, either figuratively or literally? A nice man who kept his boat several slips away pulled me out of a river when I was six. I surely would have drowned. I remember sinking alarmingly fast from the surface after my sister accidentally knocked me off of the deck of my parent's boat with a mop. He just happened to see the whole thing as it happened. I don't know how he managed to fish me out of the murky water as swiftly as he did. I never thanked him. Kids can be such selfish bastards. 9. What is your biggest time waster? TV. I wish I was one of those people who didn't have one. 10. At this moment, how many people are you mad at? A relative who is being a total selfish ass bag and doesn't deserve the lovely spouse or children this person has. I wish someone would toss said person on their fat ass and make them pay for their selfish stupidity. People keep giving more and more chances to a person who deserves none. ~Bonus Question~ Do you ever blow your nose while in the shower? No. |
| Bleak Spouse | Posted 6/11/2008 11:48:15 PM | show profile 1. How often per day do you feel ugly? It's impossible to know what you really look like, so I don't think about it. 2. Have you ever sucked the toes of another person? No 3. Have you ever witnessed "what goes around comes around" in action? No 4. In what ways are you parsimonious? I don't own many things at all. Just lots of books. But I spend a fortune on coffee, iced tea, hot tea, Vitamin water, Diet Coke, so on. I spend most of my day drinking stuff and reading. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? No. You're born how you are, why be ashamed of anything. 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? No. Teachers hated me in grade school and high school and I hated them. In grad school there was a poet I adimired, but he didn't change my life. In general I think teachers are dictactors who think they know what's true and try to impose it on you. But unless you're Dostoyevsky, don't tell me what's true. 8. Has someone ever saved your life, either figuratively or literally? Not someone, but something. Great books, paintings, music, movies save lots of people's lives daily without realizing it. 9. What is your biggest time waster? too much email. though it's good to stay in touch with friends. 10. At this moment, how many people are you mad at? none |
| df | Posted 6/12/2008 12:18:35 AM | show profile 1. How often per day do you feel ugly? seldom or never and if, I walk past a construction site (joking) 2. In what ways are you parsimonious? okay, I had to look the word up. not being a native speaker sometimes sucks. And I am a cheapo in so many ways... its quite embarrassing. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? I always have really badly kept heels and my nails are often not nicely manicured. And then i sit at some business lunch and see the other womens hands and I really feel embarrassed. 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? yes. I am very thankful about it and try to give others what he gave me. 7. What is the most ironic thing that has happened to you recently? someone told a story at a business lunch about a person/situation without knowing it was me he was talking about. 8. Has someone ever saved your life, either figuratively or literally? Yes, in bot ways. Twice literally figuratively many times. 9. What is your biggest time waster? mb and gawker. and translating words and phrases on language boards. love doing that. I guess it helps other and it sort of my crossword puzzle. 10. At this moment, how many people are you mad at? uhhh plenty. ~Bonus Question~ Do you ever blow your nose while in the shower? yes. PS: answering rtq from Rio/Brazil...it has become my little retreat and part connection to my home while traveling and sitting in a random hotel room ;-) thank you janet. And since we put our pics up, people who know me know now anyway who I am, so I don't have to be secretive. RTQ - home away from home. |
| writesonwater | Posted 6/12/2008 5:53:56 AM | show profile | email poster Love the RTQs. Nicely done, Janet, as ever. You rock. 1. How often per day do you feel ugly? Too often. Even once is too much. I haven't been paying enough caretaking attention to myself. 2. Have you ever sucked the toes of another person? My babies, more kisses to happy little feet, really. Nothing like the giggle of a baby to set the world aright. 3. Have you ever witnessed "what goes around comes around" in action? Yes! Someone I know well was dumped by his fiancee, a girl who had been cheating on him. The girl married the guy she was cheating with, ended up having a breakdown and being institutionalized, eventually getting out, dumping her husband and coming grovelling back to my friend, insisting that he was the "only one she ever really loved". To top it all off, the guy that stole her away called to "warn" my friend, probably just to revenge on his wife and spoil her plans. So my friend tells this guy "What goes around comes around!" -- and tells the unfaithful ex-ex to buzz off. It's a freaking country song. 4. In what ways are you parsimonious? I should be moreso. It's been a splurgey year. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? I echo the hands thing -- I love a manicure, but sometimes it's the last thing on my list, and then I see someone with very nice hands and I feel bad. And like Nora Ephron, I feel bad about my neck ... that's Ephron, isn't it? 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? Oh, yes. I had a couple teachers who were very encouraging -- the ones who noticed I was really smart, regardless of how many things I didn't turn in because my adolescence was a form of torture. Mr. Parent. Mr. Robinson, Mr. Tait, Mr. Knight, Mr. Jantzen, Miss Burleigh, Mr. Capps. I wish I could tell them all how they helped me. Go teachers. Yay teachers. 7. What is the most ironic thing that has happened to you recently? Tonight, I was sitting there struggling with deadlines and desires to work on my book and other projects, and two quotes from the google thing popped up in short succession: Paul Valery - "The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up." Immanuel Kant - "To do is to be." Utterly inspiring and life-changing. I suddenly figured out a strategy to reach all my goals, and I'd been moaning to my husband that I COULDN"T. Now I have a gameplan, and I'm hoping that where there's a will there's a WAy. Much better feeling. 8. Has someone ever saved your life, either figuratively or literally? Yes. Emergency C-section for one. Almost named my baby after that doctor. My baby's 25 now, and says he's glad I didn't. Also, as college student travelling in packed car going home for Christmas, pulled out of snow-drifted ditch in 20-below weather by angel with tow winch after car skidded -- no sailed -- off icy road and softly into ditch. road had been closed behind us in the middle of the night. 9. What is your biggest time waster? Fun research. 10. At this moment, how many people are you mad at? There may be some anger simmering on some distant back burner, but I'm at peace with the world, for the most part. Today, anyway ;) ~Bonus Question~ Do you ever blow your nose while in the shower? If I have a cold. |
| Agirlwalksintoabookstore... | Posted 6/12/2008 9:02:31 AM | show profile 1. How often per day do you feel ugly? Several. When I'm out on the street and see that there are so many beautiful women out there thast it makes me feel inadequate. I know, I'm a bit shallow. 2. Have you ever sucked the toes of another person? No. 3. Have you ever witnessed "what goes around comes around" in action? YES. Actually, it was more schadenfreude (sp)--taking delight in the misfortunes of others, though in this case the guy definitely deserved what was coming to him. I was driving on the highway, on a two-lane road that was twisting and turning. So the speed limit couldn't have been much higher than 45. All of a sudden, up behind me came this guy in a sports car who kept honking at me, for some reason--pulled in front of me and a few other cars, going way faster than he should have. and in general being erratic and dangerous. About ten minutes later, I passed him--he had been pulled over by a cop. 4. In what ways are you parsimonious? (I had to look this word up before I could answer the question). I'm parsimonious when it comes to food--I'm a grocery-store shopper and rarely, if ever, eat at restaurants. Partly because I'm cheap, partly because I'm single and I hate eating alone. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? My butt and thighs. 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? A history teacher in high school, and a history professor in college, who got me hooked on my current passion, medieval history and law. 7. What is the most ironic thing that has happened to you recently? I can't think of anything off the top of my head. 8. Has someone ever saved your life, either figuratively or literally? Probably, but can't think of any recent examples. 9. What is your biggest time waster? Surfing the internet, watching reality TV. 10. At this moment, how many people are you mad at? None. ~Bonus Question~ Do you ever blow your nose while in the shower? Where are these RTQ coming from? lol. No. |
| voracious reader | Posted 6/12/2008 9:24:43 AM | show profile 1. How often per day do you feel ugly? Until these front teeth are fixed, which I might add is several months away, --- 24/7! 2. Have you ever sucked the toes of another person? Nope. 3. Have you ever witnessed "what goes around comes around" in action? Yes. Not part of my vocabulary or character. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? My teeth, not withstanding, no. 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? At different points in my life there were many. Some were helpful in building character, while others were important in building enlightenment. 7. What is the most ironic thing that has happened to you recently? The husband and I often wake up during the night. Had the pleasure of going out of town without him for a few days and both of us slept like logs. Hummmm..... 8. Has someone ever saved your life, either figuratively or literally? Yes, on two occasions and I have the scars to prove it. 9. What is your biggest time waster? Finding comfortable shoes. 10. At this moment, how many people are you mad at? The day is young. BQ Nope. |
| caitlinkelly | Posted 6/12/2008 9:54:57 AM | show profile 1. Not often. External physical beauty is overrated and fades. I like Ben Harper's song "diamonds on the inside." 2. No thanks. 3. Very rarely. I'm dismayed how often the (charming) wretches win. 4. Many. I've been called cheap and who cares? My accountant is thrilled with my savings rate and his opinion matters more. I splurge on some things and very happily so. 5. Nope. Having been through pneumonia and three surgeries makes me damn grateful to eve have a strong and healthy body, whatever its condition. Whenever pamelabeth and nandy check in, it's a reminder of that. 6. The prof who questioned my paper and assumed -- because it was smart - I must have plagiarized. Taught me to stand up for myself. 7. ? 8. Indeed, the private detective who smoked out the creep then ruining my life. 9. On-line BBs like this one. :-) 10. A few. BQ: Janet, you and bodily fluids.....!!! EEeeeew. No. |
| KC4 | Posted 6/12/2008 9:56:10 AM | show profile 1. How often per day do you feel ugly? Eh, not too badly. I mostly think, 'man, i am not photogenic,' or 'man, i need some makeup stat.' 2. Have you ever sucked the toes of another person? Blech. No. 3. Have you ever witnessed "what goes around comes around" in action? Yes...typically with people who cheat. 4. In what ways are you parsimonious? SAT word! Um, I refuse to buy a car because gas prices (not to mention car prices) are insane. I will mull over dropping $1K on a hot handbag (but never do) but if I go to Express or some other mall store I can't stop bitching about the high prices. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? Working on those abs... 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? Probably my high school yearbook advisor. And my 2nd kindergarten teacher - the first one was a straight-out-of-Matilda wench who I'm sure would have made me drop out at age 6. Fortunately, class overcrowding resulted in me being moved to the new, young, fun teacher who would jump rope with us and had a costume corner. 7. What is the most ironic thing that has happened to you recently? Got a cd from an ex this week, a movie soundtrack I had begged him for when we were dating. Main song is about a couple reuniting and falling in love again. And no, it's not a romantic gesture. He doesn't want to get back together, and I have a new guy now. 8. Has someone ever saved your life, either figuratively or literally? Now I have that Elton John song in my head...Hmm, I've had scary accidents but not exactly life-threatening I guess. 9. What is your biggest time waster? The Internet! Also, back-to-back episodes of Law & Order. 10. At this moment, how many people are you mad at? None, but I'm pretty sure the construction workers reenacting 'Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk' on my roof will be here any minute. BQ No. Oh, and Pamela Beth, I think reusing the plastic bags is a good thing. |

Have you ever witnessed "what goes around comes around" in action? Kind of: While finishing college I responded to an ad for a job. Snotty editor says a recent grad couldn't possibly handle the demands of a full time job. Thinking maybe he'd think I was spunky, I fired off a snappy letter pointing out that I worked full time, maintained a 3.5 gpa - that his writer's couldn't do MY job. Never heard back. Years later I heard that he applied for a job at the paper where I was working at the time but was turned down. 4. In what ways are you parsimonious? Let me count the ways - I buy almost everything from groceries to clothing on sale. Coupons, discount cards, winter coats at the end of the season (this year I got a $300 coat from Macy's for about $100), keep the heat down (green and thrifty.) But I'm not cheap. I over-tip waitresses and the lady who does my mani/pedi. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? See above note on belly. 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? Middle school english teacher - Nellie DeLong. | pholiday | Posted 6/12/2008 12:37:33 PM | show profile Pamela--I absolutely agree with the dog bags. Even though I buy a crap-load of groceries at least once a month, it never seems to be enough. I ask to get double bagged at the grocery store to last me a few weeks! And they are all put to good use. Otherwise there would be little turds all over the city. His Girl -- Burgeoning belly?!?!?! Have you made a decision on having another sweet little baby?!?!?!? |
| HisGirlFriday | Posted 6/12/2008 1:58:38 PM | show profile pholiday; Ha! Nope - blame the microwave popcorn that calls my name late at night .... Oh - and I forgot someone who saved my life literally - my dad. I was rowing with friends in a boat on a lake as a kid and as the kid behind me brought the oar up over my head he clocked me right in the forehead, knocking me into the water. I blacked out and the next thing I remember was my dad carrying me back to shore. |

| nandy | Posted 6/12/2008 2:13:17 PM | show profile Pamela, Although I used the plastic bags from the grocery store for garbage liners, they multiplied like rabbits, and we always had many more than we ever could use. Now I'm using eco-bags (actually Steve Madden store bags which are HUGE and hold about two grocery bags worth of food each) and get a rebate from my grocer for not using their bags. I find I don't always have my eco-bags with me (and they're far too large for small purchases), so I seem to have a steady-but-reduced flow of plastic bags into my house...enough to keep from buying liners. |
| Mag Girl | Posted 6/12/2008 4:06:59 PM | show profile Nandy, I'm in the same boat as you. I found my bags on Amazon somewhere, but I can't remember the name. They're huge- definitely hold 2-3 plastic bags' worth of groceries. |
| keltoi2 | Posted 6/12/2008 4:28:55 PM | show profile 1. How often per day do you feel ugly? I don't. 2. Have you ever sucked the toes of another person? No. 3. Have you ever witnessed "what goes around comes around" in action? Not often enough, but I don't let it bother me. 4. In what ways are you parsimonious? I'm not cheap at all, and used to be quite the spendthrift, but I've gotten far more budget-minded since marriage (funny how that works) and instant family and been quite amazed at how much further my money goes. 5. Are there any parts of your body that you are ashamed of? A few parts could use a little work, but ashamed? Nah. 6. Was there a teacher or professor that changed your life? Yup, Mr Peterson in high school history class. Was the most demanding teacher in the school--in a good way, in that he expected a lot from his students but was totally fair about it. Made history come alive. He gave me a few higher grades on my report card early in senior year than the screwup I was in high school deserved to help me get into college. 7. What is the most ironic thing that has happened to you recently? Just got back from a biz trip and during the trip my colleagues and I swapped "food poisoning on biz trip" stories. On the flight home, I came down with either a stomach flu or, yes, food poisoning. 8. Has someone ever saved your life, either figuratively or literally? When I was 4, I nearly choked to death on a marble in my throat (I was already blue). My 8-year-old brother ran and got my dad who someone dislodged it with his finger down my throat. Also had a few unexplainable life-saving occurrences too. 9. What is your biggest time waster? The Internet and commuting. 10. At this moment, how many people are you mad at? No one in particular. ~Bonus Question~ Do you ever blow your nose while in the shower? With perfectly good tissues 2 feet away? Why? |
| keltoi2 | Posted 6/12/2008 4:57:20 PM | show profile I meant "someHOW dislodged it", of course. |
