What kind of drink do you order when you are at a bar? And, what is in it in case I haven't heard of it before?

Summertime dive bar: Malibu and Diet Coke. Swanky bar: sidecar (cognac, cointreau, lemon juice). Wine bar: shiraz or zinfandel, depending on the selection.

I tend to like cosmos and things like mojitos.

My standard is a Ketel One and soda w/ a lime.

I used to really like Greyhounds when I lived in a hot climate, and when I lived wine country it seemed that every restaurant in town had a champagne cocktail that would utter my name the minute my can hit the chair.

If I'm in a hot, tropical place, I just have to get some sort of fruity, girly drink like a mai tai or rum punch at least once. I usually steer clear of sweet booze, but there's something about a humid climate and a pretty beach that turns me into an 80's sorority sister. On my last hot weather trip the hotel next door broke open coconuts and filled them w/ condensed milk, rum, cinnamon and a couple of other things. Whoa man. Thank God coconuts don't grow on trees in the North East. I'd never get any work done.

I rarely order wine at restaurants, as the markup is just disgustingly high.

When I'm out, I'm a big fan of the cosmo. But a good cosmo at a NYC bar these days is staggeringly expensive, so I don't really go to bars.

This is something I drink at home--no laughing here--strawberry dessert wine. Seriously. Its the perfect summer drink.

*And costing about $5 a bottle.

If I am having dinner, I'll usually order a glass of wine, or my husband and I will share a bottle. Sometimes we bring our own and just pay the corkage.

Otherwise, I stick to pretty simple drinks. I like vodka with cranberry juice (served in a rocks glass, not a martini glass...I always spill all over myself when I try to drink out of a martini glass). I also enjoy a good mojito, which has run, simple syrup, lime and lots of mint. But be sure the bar uses fresh mint, not mint "flavoring." I ordered a mojito in Greece once (my mistake...should not have tried to get fancy), and it came back looking and tasting like Scope!

I like to peruse the specialty cocktail list, if one is available. I wish I could be all smooth and urbane and just order something like Johnnie Walker Black on the rocks, but I need my cocktails to have a little bit of sweetness to them.

Here's a good, easy drink to make at home for friends during the summer: Put ice in a glass. Add vodka to taste. Top with fresh lemonade (the Simply Lemonade stuff you can buy at the store works well, too). Serve. You can gussy this up by adding tonic water for fizz, or adding a little grenadine to make a pretty color. You might also try sticking in some mint, or putting sugar around the rim of the glass. But the basic version is pretty tasty! I served it at a summer party, and I referred to it as "Adult Lemonade" to differentiate from the regular stuff that my pregnant friends had to make do with.

I love a good Manhattan (whiskey and sweet vermouth). On the rocks in the summer, straight up in the winter. Yum!

Tanqueray G & T; caiprinha (deadly in any quantity); Lillet on the rocks. Capirinha is made with cachaca, Brazilian white rum which is about 30000 proof; tastes a little like a margarita. I also like pisco sours, made with pisco, Peruvian liquor. Lillet is an aperitif, French, pale yellow -- refreshing and light, like vermouth. Kir royale -- champagne with a little cassis in the bottom is also nice.

this sounds weird but it's sooooo good:

a light lager beer (stella is perfect, bud is great too) mixed with lemonade (2 parts beer to 1 part 'ade.)

we call it a "spezzi", but I don't think that's its official name...

Mmm, good topic. If I had the money, I'd drink good Scotch -- Lagavulin or Laphroig (although I'm a girl). Adore a well-made Manhattan on the rocks. In the summer I enjoy Coppola Winery's Sofia rose, Caipirinhas, mojitos, and Campari and soda, if I'm in the mood.

Blueberry Press
My favorite drink of the moment is a Blueberry Press.

Blueberry: Stoli blueberry vodka (can be substituted for Absolute Peach or 3Olives Pomegranate)
Press: this just means half soda and half sprite

It's fruity and not too sweet. Yummmmy!

Not at bars nearly as much as back in the day, but at an Irish pub--pint o' Guinness, natch; other bars, a cold Yuengling, Corona, or Negro Modelo. In non-beer mode, a vodka martini (shaken, yaddayadda), a mojito in tropical places, or a glass of wine.

And home-made pina coladas are always fun when it's hot out.

I like those too, Natasha. If you're in an Irish bar, they call them Shandies. I haven't had one in ages. It's about time I revisted that old fav.

Natasha, they are shandies in NY wherever the irish congregate. My own tipple at bars: tanqueray and tonic-- ever since, a long time ago, someone told me that was a journalist's drink...

Lately I have been waxing nostaglic and ordering a Sidecar.

That blueberry press sounds good! I may just have to try it myself.

Unemployed, do you happen to live in LA? We should meet up for a Blueberry Press!
Astera Posted – 6/18/2008 9:14:23 PM | show profile
Ooh, ooh, I want a Blueberry Press! I live in Orange County, CA, and I really want to get out of the house because all I do is sit in a dark room and write. I just quit a hated job, but I do miss the co-workers and office gossip.

At a bar, I usually look to see what is on tap, and if any of my favorite beers/ales are there, I order it (Bass Ale, being my current favorite). If I'm in a hard-liquor kind of mood, a cosmo always hits the spot, but only at a "fancy bar" never at a local wateringhole. Local bars I'd probably stick to rum and coke.

But in general, I drink wine; with dinner, out with friends, at a party, and even in bars. A nice dry, white wine is my preferred beverage, like a Soave. French Chardonnay (not California) or Pouilly Fusse are good but more expensive.

And if I'm in a sweet mood, I like red Dubonnet, on the rocks, with a twist.

I love Jack and Coke.

Tanqueray and Tonic, lime - best summer drink. I also made up my own drink (maybe) : gin and sour mix.

Margaritas, sangria. In the winter pretty much anything with whiskey. Bushmills on the rocks or a whiskey sour (light on the sour or it gets too sweet.) Hot cider and Jameson is awesome.

Never had a taste for vodka. Reminds me of the vile Long Island Iced Teas I drank frosh year in college.

Speaking of waxing nostalgic...
my favorite and character leaden grandfather drank Canadian Club Whiskey with Canada dry ginger ale, in a highball with a marshiano cherry settled at the bottom of the glass.

I was given as a Christmas gift a set of gorgeous Baccarat bucket glasses, and during the holidays I always have my dearly departed Grandpa's favorite drink and remember how wonderful he made the holidays. That is my favorite drink, but I couldn't possibly muddle the memory by ordering it at a bar. It has to be at home, with holiday finery all over the house and hopefully some snow on the ground, or at least a respectable chill in the air.

Ha! wineaux -- more nostalgia: my mom still orders an Old Fashioned - even in Vegas, where I'm sure it's a pain to put together the cherry and the orange and all the other girly stuff that's in it.

Since you are dieting I would recommend the "South Beach" -- I made this up myself: Sprite 0 with cassis. Few cals, very elegant.

For the Donna Chang perhaps gin and lemonade - aka in the UK: "mother's ruin."

For my New Yorker mother and maternal grandparents, Manhattans and the occasional Rob Roy were the cocktails of choice.
