PRGirl:

You're going to have to set up informational interviews beforehand, otherwise, like Mirage said, you won't be able to get past security. And that doesn't pertain to just publishing houses, but many buildings in NY. I've interviewed in very high security buildings where you have to get past not one, but three security checkpoints, and that ain't happening if nobody's expecting you. Where I currently work is a minimal security building in comparison, but you still need to have an appointment to get past the front desk.

I'm not saying this to discourage you, I just don't want this to be a wasted trip because of that one detail...

Thank you everybody so much for all of the response!!

A little update on the trip- it went well and I actually got 2 informational interviews and 1 actual interviews. I decided that the "just showing up out of the blue" approach might not be the best idea. So, I did a lot of calling and got some appointments at the bigger pubs (Conde Nast, Hearst) There would have been NO WAY to get past that security unannounced. I put my friend's NY address on my resume and I think that helped a TON with more feedback.

I am heading back on Monday and have a few interviews set up which I got from just sending my resume in and calling (quite a few times!) So, hopefully I will land a job before the big move, which I'm pretty sure is August 1.

Again, thank you every body for your advice. It's great to know that so many people in the industry are willing to post these responses.

I'll keep everyone updated :)
