| Shape WeightLossDiary | Posted 7/1/2008 8:04:37 PM | show profile We're looking for candidates for Shape magazine's 2009 Weight Loss Diary writer. It's a great deal: You write a 400-word first-person column every month for the magazine (paid) and two blog entries a week about your year-long weight-loss journey. We also hook you up with a team of experts to consult throughout the year and help you with a weight-loss program: a personal trainer, nutritionist, and life coach. You should be... ...a 20- or 30-something woman who needs to lose at least 20 pounds (more is fine too). And you'll need to be comfortable sharing personal details (weight, diet and exercise details, health details like cholesterol, blood pressure, etc., and various personal challenges) with our national audience. NYC-area is preferred, living near a major metropolitan area is a must. What it entails: One meeting a week with a personal trainer; 2 a month with a nutritionist; 2 a month with a life coach (by phone or in-person). You'll have to be absolutely committed to both the program (working out on your own, eating right, etc.) and the writing and editing process of the column. You'll also have to be available for a photo shoot once a month to go on-page with your story. You don't have to be a professional writer, but it's preferred. This is as much an editorial gig as it is a fitness one! You'll start working with us in late July/early August. How to apply: Tell us about yourself. We need your: -current weight -height -age -marital/family status -occupation Give us a 1-page description of your struggle with your weight--how you gained the weight, particular challenges you face (emotional eating, traveling a lot for work, busy schedule, etc.), an idea of what your current lifestyle, exercise, and eating habits are like. You MUST also include a recent full-length and a recent close-up photo of yourself to be considered. No phone calls please. Email shapewld@gmail.com by July 14th. Thanks! | MiOhMY | Posted 7/2/2008 11:51:57 AM | show profile Nevermind...reading is fundamental. |
| ywrite | Posted 7/2/2008 12:22:15 PM | show profile Would love to do it but i'm too old and don't live in a major metro area... www.wordsaremyworld.com |
| wineaux | Posted 7/2/2008 2:17:29 PM | show profile The timing couldn't be any better for me, as I just started working out again and want to slim down. I was just thinking of starting a fitness blog, too. I wrote the essay, now I jjust have to get my digital camara back from one of my clients and take a full body pic. Whoa man, I think that's going to be the hardest part;seeing a full not-hot-body-shot. |
| Write On | Posted 7/3/2008 1:51:30 PM | show profile location I live in Portland Maine, just under two hours away from Boston. Is this considered a metropolitan area? |
| RhiannonCoppin | Posted 7/11/2008 10:55:09 PM | show profile Ummm.. is this for real? There's nothing particularly wrong with this post, but in performing due e-diligence, I couldn't seem to find the same information posted anywhere on shape.com or elsewhere on the web. Also, I can't find any mention of "shapewld@gmail.com" anywhere on the web, except here, (do shape editors not have a shape.com domain?) and also noticed that this is Shape WeightLossDiary's only post on media bistro. I was seriously excited about applying, but I'm not interested in sending some random my "confessions of an emotional eater" along with a picture of my, err, fat ass. |
| seeattleme2 | Posted 7/12/2008 1:42:03 PM | show profile They've been running this feature for years. I'm surprised they are advertising it this way. You'd think they could find soeone the way they've found someones before. |
| hayfell | Posted 7/13/2008 12:29:09 PM | show profile I'll do a weight gain feature! No, seriously. I'm the mom of a toddler who is "just so skinny!" I hear it all the time and I'm sick of it. It's like if you're fat, it's a taboo subject, but if you're skinny, everyone can point it out. I'm very self-conscious about my tall, super-skinny frame. I would love to put on some weight (muscle) the right way so I can look a little bulkier (not Man-ish) and can stop reassuring my mother that I'm eating AND keeping it down. |
| coastalwriter | Posted 7/14/2008 1:17:33 AM | show profile Shape recruited candidates via Mediabistro last year as well. I don't think this is a weird forum to woo potential writers. |
| storyofomfg | Posted 7/14/2008 4:56:29 AM | show profile heyfell yeah, me too -- so damn slender it's a total pain in the ass. and rich too. jesus, what a nightmare. |
| storyofomfg | Posted 7/14/2008 5:05:11 AM | show profile no, seriously. |
| Mulberry | Posted 7/22/2008 2:05:40 PM | show profile Has anyone heard back about this? |
| snappiness | Posted 7/22/2008 2:53:04 PM | show profile Weight gain In the same boat here. I tried pitching a few weight-gain features and "why is it okay to pick on skinny people?" story ideas when I was writing for the women's mags but you can imagine where that went. Swimming is great for gaining upper body muscle, and cycling for lower. Plus you just have to eat all the time, six or seven meals a day, hard to do with a busy lifestyle. Admittedly it's a good problem to have, as far as body problems go. |
| SeeKatyWrite | Posted 7/22/2008 5:45:22 PM | show profile | email poster I sent several pics and an essay and have yet to hear anything. Not sure if Kansas City is a large enough metropolitan area, but, man, I'd like to participate in this. We'll see. ------ ----- katy ryan editor | freelance writer | blogger www.KatyWrites.com |
| Write On | Posted 7/22/2008 10:29:13 PM | show profile I had sent an e-mail asking if Portland, Maine was a metropolitan enough city to qualify. I received an e-mail from an intern saying it was, and to send my profile over. I did that and have not heard since. |
| yogabitch | Posted 8/4/2008 9:14:27 AM | show profile | email poster Anyone hear from Shape? Has anyone gotten a response to their submission yet? |
| Newsy | Posted 8/4/2008 9:50:00 AM | show profile Hey everyone! I submitted my info and haven't heard anything. Anyone know who to follow-up with? |
