We all know it's extremely unlikely the OP is sending material to the copyright office. I know lots of people who make their living as writers, and very few feel the register their articles with the copyright office. (And yes, I know the added protection this gives you in terms of recovering additional damages on the rare instance this goes to court).

--I'd be curious to find out if the OP included these stories in her periodic submissions to the copyright office. While not technically necessary to recover damages, it's a good habit to get into and can support any future litigation.--

My columns are posted on a plethora of sites that deal with everything from treadmill sales to adult pornography. I don't waste my time chasing down the links, because there is little I can do about it.

Your work is automatically copyrighted. Check with your state's attorney general to see what your options are without hiring a lawyer. Most AG's have a website where you can file a complaint and can provide basic information about whether you have the ability to sue in small claims court. It's worth the research to find out.

But the best way to make sure that these articles no longer "hurt" your reputation as a writer is to move forward as a writer so that there are more hits on Google to fresh publications and work. One lousy hit is not going to turn off an editor or agent who may be researching the veracity of the claims in a query letter.

But be prepared for a countersuit if you do pursue legal action. If the guy can prove you've damaged the reputation of his website, he can file for damages the same as you can file for damages for his hurting your reputation as a writer.

If it were me, I would just move on and chalk it up as a hard knock in the college of life experiences.
