Topic: Employer only wants to talk via e-mail

| Agirlwalksintoabookstore... | Posted 7/8/2008 8:51:09 PM | show profile This is a bit unusual. I applied for a job online about a week and a half ago, and that afternoon I got an e-mail from the employer (there's no HR department), saying that they would be in touch to set up and interview. So on Thursday, I called to follow up. The person wasn't in, but her colleague was, and took down a message. Yesterday, I got an e-mail from my contact person, to set up the interview. After going back and forth about scheduling the interview, we never really set a date. So I called the employer back and got another message-taker--even though I'd received my last e-mail from this woman not fifteen minutes previously. Maybe I shouldn't be concerned about this, but I am; in all of this interaction (or not), I've never once heard this woman's voice! And as yet, no interview has actually been set up. What should I do? |
| seeattleme2 | Posted 7/8/2008 9:44:50 PM | show profile if it is Hearst, and the "She " is actually a "he" we all know why... man who sounds like a woman...how does he make love to a woman with that voice? oh that's right--her voice is worse, at a higher yet squeak... |
| Village Gal | Posted 7/9/2008 9:51:34 AM | show profile Seattle... I thought your response was pretty silly. Uh, maybe he's gay or transgender... |
| foodlit | Posted 7/9/2008 10:43:42 AM | show profile Or maybe its just a better use of time to use email? Not sure why you are at all concerned, surely once you do the interview you'll see or hear from the contact person. Why does it matter if you 'talk' now or not? |
| abqwriter | Posted 7/9/2008 10:47:36 AM | show profile I wrote for a business editor of a newspaper for over a year before I met him in person, and only talked to him by phone a handful of times. I received new assignments, filed stories and sent invoices all via email. For some, it's the preferred means of communication. I wouldn't worry too much about it. |
| beachbum | Posted 7/9/2008 11:11:02 AM | show profile don't worry about it, i for one prefer email, it's better than getting voice mail or interrupting someone. you'll meet her soon enough. |
| Agirlwalksintoabookstore... | Posted 7/9/2008 11:14:35 AM | show profile Thanks, everyone. I have Aspergers, and I don't really have a good grasp on social relationships and ettiquette, so I didn't know if she was being rude/ I was being rude/ or if it didn't matter. It just seemed a little odd to me at first. |
| seeattleme2 | Posted 7/9/2008 1:46:10 PM | show profile Village, true, you're right, he's probably gay or transgender. My bad. But it was a joke response. Seriously, though, there are people who never use the phone, for whatever reason. |
| seeattleme2 | Posted 7/9/2008 2:02:34 PM | show profile I just found out he is gay. And that he talks on the phone all the time. And he's not with Hearst, he's with Hachette. So....never mind. |
| jseconds77 | Posted 7/9/2008 3:09:07 PM | show profile man, some of these replies are funny! I really think that some of you should try your hands at comedy or joke writing. Please don't be insulted! some of this material is hilarious. |
| wineaux | Posted 7/9/2008 3:29:09 PM | show profile On a serious note, I LOVE clients who only want to communicate via email. It seems when we communicate on the phone, they are much more likely to waste my time with conversation that has nothing to do w/ the project. My ideal client is one who has a few very specific and strategic meetings/conversations, then communicates w/ me via email of any changes or additions to the project. Things get done much faster, and considering I work by the hours, this is very cost effective for them. |
| Agirlwalksintoabookstore... | Posted 7/11/2008 5:12:41 PM | show profile On a follow-up: heard back from the woman today (again via e-mail), and even though I'd never talked to her or gone in to see them, the e-mail said, thank you for coming in to interview for the position. Maybe it was just a generic e-mail, but I'm still scratching my head over that one. |
| Agirlwalksintoabookstore... | Posted 7/11/2008 5:13:28 PM | show profile I also meant to add that I didn't get the job. |
