Topic: Building a writer's website for clips/resume

| jennel85 | Posted 7/14/2008 9:51:01 PM | show profile | email poster Hey everyone, I've been considering building my own website to showcase some of my clips and my resume, but I have no idea how to get started. I'm prety much clueless when it comes to this kind of stuff. Does anyone know an easy, AFFORDABLE way to enter the 21st century and get my stuff on-line? I'd love to have my own domain name, but if that's too costly and/or difficult for someone who isnt technically-savvy, I'm open to other suggestions. I'm thinking a Blogspot or Freewebs page isn't too professional. What do you guys do? Thanks! |
| abqwriter | Posted 7/14/2008 10:00:10 PM | show profile | email poster I use Apple, so I bought a subscription to .Mac and used their iWeb software to build my website (www.lisaabeyta.com). It's pretty idiot proof with some pretty nice templates to start you out. I used GoDaddy.com to register my domain names and paid a whopping $20 for both. This weekend I wasn't saying very nice things about Apple, because their switch to the mobileme messed up my ability to log into my website and make changes, but it seems the kinks are already worked out. And it is useful to have a website for this purpose. I had an editor contact me recently and ask if I was interested in doing a piece. I'd been referred to her by an editor at another publication. She'd used my website to decide if she wanted to contact me, so I guess you could say it's already paid for itself for this year. |

It was around $9 for the domain name and another $9 for the WebSite tonight software. It's very easy to use and you can make changes anytime. My website is nothing fancy, but I put it up on a Sunday afternoon and it suits my purposes. Check it out if you like, www.customsearchgroup.com |

Just backdate the post to when the clip was published, and you've got an easily searchable, indexable list of clips in the order that they were published (tag them by publication, or type of article, or whatever is most useful for your purposes). And if you're really not into doing yourname.blogspot.com as your go-to site, just buy your domain name (not free, but cheap) and get it hosted (not free, but affordable) and set up the blog framework on there (free). |

I think I pay maybe $50 a year for three domain registrations and (so far) one website, which I created using one of their very simple software wizards. They offer a ton of free add-ons to help design the site and also for marketing purposes. And I've used their 24 hour phone assistance more than a few times with great results. |
| snappiness | Posted 7/18/2008 2:09:03 PM | show profile I bought a domain and hired someone to create a basic template for the site, and I maintain it myself using Dreamweaver. I create new pages and upload clips, photos etc. For me, a blog wouldn't work because I want this to be really easy for editors. At a glance they can see my clips organized by type of story (covers, profiles, service etc), then read through brief excerpts and see what magazines they're from, then click through to see the entire article if they want. I also have a bio section, a "speaking" section and a books section. So, basically it's a big fat resume with photos. I know you can do some of that blogging, but I couldn't do what I wanted in that format. |
