Ok, so I know someone at a major news organization, and he told me to let him know what job/s I'm interested in on the job board. Every single one - even the beginner/lower-level job listings - ask for 3-5 yrs experience.
So what's the trick??

Convince yourself that your internships/school volunteer experience have given you that much experience, then convince your contact. Have concrete examples of how you've learned more and done more than some people with more years experience. Help HIM sell you to the hiring manager.

And if I haven't had any internship/school experience? I'm an English major, but I haven't worked in any journalism environment. I have had writing/editing experience in the jobs I've held, but not solely focused on those skills.

You have to take the glass half full approach....talk about what you have done, not what you haven't. Pull out your relevant skills, even if not directly relevant jobs, and show how they transfer. Be confident and make it clear you are a hard worker and fast learner.

Good luck
