I have an foreign news story I want to run this fall. I have contacts at a few newspapers, but I am hoping to sell it to a magazine. My pitch is almost ready, but the story will be timely. I have access to everyone I need for the story and believe I am the right person for the job. However, knowing the story needs to run this fall is stressing me out. I have been a journalist for several years, but I lack magazine experience. Can I pull this off or should I just go with a someplace that knows me? I feel like magazines plan well in advance. Am I to late to have get my story in a September or October issue? Please help if you can. Thanks.

Most monthly magazines are planning well past Oct.

You're too late unless you can find a weekly to sell it to.

I work at a women's newsstand monthly and we are now assigning stories for our December issue. Caitlin is right--think about weeklies or web sites with shorter lead times.

You might be able, if you miss all the mag. deadlines, to do something for radio as well. You can sometimes make as much or more money with multiple sales to different media and outlets (even non-competing papers) than to one magazine. I sold three different versions of one story to a large regional, a U.S. national and a Canadian regional paper (overseas assignment),with my own photos, and covered my costs. It would have been a terrific magazine story, I thought, but no mag. editor agreed.
