| qwertyu | Posted 7/23/2008 5:25:12 PM | show profile The winner gets $3,000. Nice! But the magazine keeps nonexclusive, eternal rights to all entries. Worth it? I'm thinking no. Anyone? |
| worldofnatasha | Posted 7/23/2008 8:26:04 PM | show profile I had the exact same reaction -- it says "all entries become the property of Real Simple." what does that mean? can you not then publish your essay elsewhere??? Maybe it would be better to just submit to that column as a freelancer, as opposed to entering the contest... |
| snappiness | Posted 7/24/2008 9:50:21 AM | show profile Honestly, what are the chances of selling the exact same word-for-word personal essay to another magazine? Zilch. Sure, this is definitely worth it to get $3000, be published in a national magazine and be able to say you are a contest winner. |
| lmanterfield | Posted 7/24/2008 10:26:26 PM | show profile $3,000 for a personal essay? There aren't many (any?) markets that would pay that. |
| qwertyu | Posted 7/27/2008 5:00:50 PM | show profile Well, from the magazine's point of view, it's $3,000 for ALL the essays. Only one person gets paid. While I'm sure a lot of the essays won't make the grade, they'll probably get some that are usable. |
| FeaturesGal | Posted 7/27/2008 7:29:21 PM | show profile Curious Have to ask to the last poster-- hinting that the wording could leave "non winners" uncompensated should their work later get chosen for the mag? |
| Mag Girl | Posted 7/28/2008 12:38:11 PM | show profile If you look in the rules, they get nonexclusive rights. So you can submit the essay elsewhere if you don't win, but Real Simple holds the right to publish it in the future if they choose to. |
