...a forum section for on-staff, very experienced editors to weigh in on "bigger picture" publishing issues.

Too much of the forum now involves beginner or silly minor issues. Even in the regular forum section, there are questions such as "how do you find writers?" or "how do you find out the email address of so-and-so." C'mon....

The forum would be much more helpful, educational, and livelier if there was a section specifically for more experienced, in-the-know, in-office magazine staff, who are creating the line-up; working with the circulation, publicity, marketing, and art departments; managing staff; meeting tight production deadlines; dealing with writers; crafting covers.

Now? Whaddaya mean "now"? Too much of it has *always* involved beginner or minor issues.

Personally, I think there should be a place on here to warn writers of bad clients. A Serious place dedicated to just that issue. That's hardly a "minor' one!

I agree with all three of you above.

I agree whole-heartedly on this one (is anyone else completely turned off by people asking 'how do I reach Paris Hilton's publicist?' Can the people posting these things really be holding assignments from editors and be that newbie? Of course, I feel the same way about publicists posting on the site who ask 'who do I contact at Oprah?') but can't imagine how MediaBistro would monitor the new category. You know and I know that anyone/everyone would weigh in in that category. That was (I think) kind of what Avant Guild was originally supposed to provide, a different level of postings but, well, didn't work.

I could not agree with you more, NakedWord. The only problem I foresee is too many newbies invading a section like what you propose, peppering the high-level discussion with yet more questions about how you find a freelance gig. So unless you cordon off that section-- an idea I don't really like, salt of the earth that I am-- I'm not sure how we could pull this off.

It's a shame, really, considering how wise and insightful I am.

many of us are already paid avantguild members but for something like this to work, i think the only way would be to create a super premium service which, unfortunately, would raise fees.

I don't see what's keeping anyone from posting about the "bigger picture" issues if someone wants to start such a discussion. It just so happens that a lot of beginners have questions and don't hesitate to post, even when their questions might be lazy or naive.

Go ahead and post....

Moved this thread to a more appropriate forum.

This is a good suggestion, but I think Chitownwritergal identifies the key issue: It's not whether we create a dedicated forum, it's whether those senior people would come here and post. And I'm just not sure I see what's in it for them.

As for ConfidentDesigner's idea of a forum for bad clients, that is something we've kicked around for a while. The stumbling block is how to set it up so that it doesn't simply turn into a chance for anonymous sniping and score settling. If you have suggestions as to how we can avoid that, please make them below.

Thanks.
