A few times over the years I've noticed a certain publishing company job listing where the applicant is instructed to "submit great article ideas" or critique the latest issue. So I've done it, and that was it. But I've kept my eye on the magazine in question and it never put someone with the advertised title on the masthead.

I'm wondering if the mag in question is floating scam ads to fish for fresh ideas. Anyone else ever experience this?

Reputable publications will pay you for this work. I've been paid by the hour for editing tests that weren't even on "live" stories. The rationale is they're paying you for your time.

Paid for editing tests?
Wow, that sounds sweet. I once spent two four-to-five-hour shifts taking copyediting tests for a newspaper (on top of my regular full-time job), and I didn't even get the gig. Not even a cup of coffee! I guess I had the last laugh though, since the newspaper business seems to be ripping itself apart.
