I've just accepted the position of senior editor at a monthly B2B and have to put together an editorial/production schedule. Basically, the B2B is around 140 pages, with 50% editorial (68-70 pages). With a staff of 2 writers and 2 editors, as well a final review by the publisher (3 days minimum), what kind of schedule would you think I need? Current: sales: 2 weeks; which overlaps with writer's 1 week; and production/edit: 1 week; final 3 days of deadline is for publisher review It's currently set up that the writers are assigned articles (by the salespeople, not the editors). Publisher does layout and editorial/production have 1 week to layout copy and edit all 70 pages. Editors also acquire copy photos and cover photo with no on-staff photogs. Editors say 1 week is not enough time for them to edit. Production designers are fried. - production designers (2) are also set up as an ad agency and produce between 40 and 50 pages of original advertising per month - both editors sign off on all 70 pages before giving to publisher - no editorial can be pre-written, so right now the writers are working on a 1 week turnaround time (about 30 pages or about 26k words each, the rest made up by guest writers) - hiring another editor or writer is not open to discussion, but the editors are currently pulling about 55-60 hours a week and want to have lives Personally, I'm not sure how the teeny staff has lasted this long. It's a lot of work but I'd like to make it run more smoothly. Any suggestions? |
