Topic: Is the price right?

| Friendly Writer | Posted 8/25/2008 12:56:37 PM | show profile | email poster I'm coming back to freelance writing after 13 years at a newspaper. In my first incarnation, there was no such thing as a blog, so I have questions. I've been offered a gig to ghostwrite 1 or 2 small entries a week. It's mostly interviewing the "author" and editing, for $250/month. Does that sound reasonable? What happens if she doesn't want to do them or I can't track her down? (She wants me to "force" her to do them.) Should I get a retainer? Also, 3-5 press releases per month, along with distribution to companies on the internet. $100 per press release seems awfully low to me, but maybe I'd make it up in volume? Thoughts? Thanks. |
| dribbledrive1 | Posted 8/25/2008 3:33:22 PM | show profile It pays about 30-60 bucks per block, depending on how many you do. Blog fees are all over the place. This seems about so-so/poor to me for ghostwriting, but also about what I'd expect in this situation. You don't want to be in a position where you are forced to track her down. I would put the contract this way: You charge a $250 a month retainer, payable in advance and on the first of every month. You are responsible for producing X amount of copy in that month. However, the contract should say she is responsible to meet or to respond to your request for a meeting, or have a standing appointment to talk. If she misses the meeting or fails to respond, and you can't produce copy as a result, you should be able to keep the money. The press release amount is very low for writing, let alone distribution. I would charge a minimum of $250-500 just for the writing. |
