I've been blogging about books for eight months, but its only been this week that I was introduced to the idea of requesting ARCs for review. How do you phrase your request? Obviously, please and thank you for your time, but how do I come across as someone to be taken seriously? And if a publisher asks you for your request faxed on letterhead, and you don't have one (a letterhead), how would you handle that? I've also heard that some people have had luck e-mailing the author directly for information on where to get ARCs of their books. Any thoughts? Thanks.

How seriously you'll be taken is a consequence of the popularity and quality of your blog. If you have good readership numbers, tell them.

As far as letterhead -- if you have Word or a word processing program, you can make your own letterhead in 10 seconds by just putting your name and address at the top, centering it, and changing the font.

I've requested ARCs via email from publishers and never had a problem.

Explain who you are, the nature of your blog, your readership, etc.

Publishers love to do this. I regularly get emails from them with offers to send an ARC, and my blog traffic is low. I'd just email them and send a link to your blog.

Thanks so much for the responses. I had no idea if doing this would be crass, but I've been sending out a few requests and hope it all pans out.

I leave every interview/informational I have with a publisher with an ARC it seems. They will give them away to anyone...so I'm sure it will be no trouble at all. But you should be contacting the marketing and/or publicity departments - they are the ones who deal with sending out ARCs for review.
