Hello,
I have had a passion for photography my whole life. Immersed in photography as a child all the way up into graduating with a BFA in photograpy.

Now, when I graduated I was clueless as to how to get out there, no real direction. It's been three years since I graduated and I settled into full time office work. This isn't what I really want to do, just surviving. But I want to do more then survive, I want to live photography. I noticed as time goes on I forget more and more of my photo knowledge. After graduating, I felt so mentally screwed up by art education, I needed to find the original spirit I had for photo, and take a hiatus.

Is it ok to apply for an internship for photography, so I can get real world experience outside of my college degree, even though I'm not in an educational institution?

My friends tell me it is not a good idea. But how will I learn and get out there? I really want to be a professional photographer. I would love to assist and apprentice, but I haven't got any real world experience. Who's going to look at a office resume and hire in a photography field? I've read on other forums that professional don't waste their time.

What should I do? Go get a Masters?

I love, conceptual, journalism, and studio photography.

There are a lot of photo internships, mostly unpaid, on Craig's List (I'm in the NYC metro area). If you'd like to try the editorial side of photography there are internships listed for all of the major magazines on Ed2010.com. Most of these are also unpaid and won't accept anyone who cannot receive college credit, but I found one (I'm a post-grad too). If you really want experience I would also recommend applying to the photo assistant jobs on Craig's List. I found it really hard to break in doing this because many of the photographers want someone with experience, but it's worth a try. I'm a year out of school and I still haven't landed anything full time. Good luck to you.

If you want to be a professional photographer, go take pictures. Post them on Flickr, on your blog, etc. You can try for internships, but photography is a skill learned by doing. Send your shots to istock, to editors, to bloggers.
