So my question and situation is: I just graduated from college this past spring. I've worked at the school paper, a small journalism internship, a pr/advertising in-house internship abroad and a few other less relevant jobs. I was in PR clubs, attended workshops, joined their programs. I started looking for jobs in February. Originally, it was a couple internships, then as graduation came closer, I picked up speed. I've applied to a little less than 100 jobs/paid internships. I've had about 15 interviews (for jobs all over the country and mostly in large PR firms), so I guess I'm not totally horrible at getting interviews...but, I still don't have a job! Right now, I've gotten a part-time job just to kill time and have some money and I am hoping to find some other temporary (hopefully writing) jobs and job search, but my question is, what should my next step be? What do I need to get a first job? Alot of people who rejected me said they just found someone with more experience (these are for jobs and internships), but obviously there's the whole "you need someone to give you a job to get experience" situation. If I must take an unpaid internship, I'm hoping I can at least find one thats part-time so I can make some money. My other options are keep looking...or look for a job in a different industry? Also, my friend suggested (and others agreed with the idea) that I move in with her in NY for a few months and try my hand there. But of course I know NY is even harder to break into than anywhere else in the US and I don't want to go and seem like one of the 500 naive 22-yr olds wandering the city, thinking they can make it. Rent and big-city attitudes aren't a problem and I figure I can also look for jobs in the neighboring cities, but I am just not sure if the "more jobs" idea in NY can outweigh the "way more people." Should I stay put or is a change of scenery a good idea? |
