Topic: trying to find outlet for short stories

| jutta | Posted 9/14/2008 9:48:37 PM | show profile I have been searching and searching but there do not seem to be too many outlets any more for short story writers. I am just a beginner but the choices seem to be cheesy websites, highly literary magazines or contests. The websites are suspicious, the magazines are of a caliber I can't shoot for yet (I'm thinking The New Yorker), and the contests are expensive. What's a novice writer to do? There was a time when magazines like Good Housekeeping and other women's mags would publish stories but not so much anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions on where one might find a place they can get some exposure for their work? Thanks in advance. |

For example, selling a short story about fishing to a fishing magazine that had never published a short story before. It's a long shot, but short stories always are. |
| flight risk | Posted 9/15/2008 2:44:58 AM | show profile There are tons more markets you're overlooking. Try small press. There are university magazines like Northwestern's Triquarterly, Glimmer Train, The Missouri Review, Paris Review, Granta etc. Even community colleges put out some nice literary mags like Oakland's Witness. Most don't pay much if anything but they're nice venues. And you'd be in good company since they often feature major writers. Good places to get exposure. |
