I just wrote a post bemoaning the dearth of outlets for short stories. I should have specified that I meant short stories that are not necessarily meant as literary fiction but simply as entertainment. As I have a vision of what kind of fiction I'd like to see more of, it's occurred to me that perhaps I should take on the huge task of starting my own online literary magazine. Does anyone have any thoughts on this crazy idea? Does it smack too much of self-publishing, for instance? What is entailed in started a lit mag?
Thanks!

It's not crazy. With the Internet, it's quick and cheap to create an online magazine. The challenge becomes in getting anyone to pay attention to it. You may merely shift your frustration from having a short story in a word document that no established magazine will publish, to having your short story published on your own web site that no one reads.

But I would say the more your online magazine is viewed as merely a vehicle you put together to publish your own writing, the less seriously it will be taken.
