What exactly is SEO Writing? What is considered a good SEO article?

Search Engine Guide
Here's a Web site that I like:

Search Engine Guide

Jennifer Laycock and her crew have tons of info on there.

The bottom line is that you can make way too much of SEO; just think of all of the different words that would make sense for someone searching for an article on your topic, then incorporate them into your writing when possible.

You can also do what used to be called "using a thesaurus," to add a wide variety of descriptive words to your writing. :)

seo is actually very important - so i am not sure if you can make too much of it. try reading up on bruce clay or danny sullivan. search engine land and copyblogger also have some information. wordtracker has a free trial version and google has its own version, but i am not sure how it works. also, all content must be relevant (most important part is content!), use (relevant) keywords, links, headers, etc. optimization is an ongoing process, and make sure you update and add fresh content regularly. also, of course, don't plagiarize! google will give you the boot.

its helpful also if you have specific questions regarding seo... it is a vast, wide land...hope this helps! good luck! and if you come up with more questions, please feel free to ask.

Hi Kitty,
If you email me at MariannaDupont@aol.com I'll send you some examples of web content that was "doctored" to improve the website's ranking. And the first thing you'll notice is: it sounds totally idiotic! The same phrases are repeated again and again and again. Lots of seemingly unnecessary webpages that all say the same thing. Text that rambles along forever, full of those same overused phrases. And so on... If you're used to clean business writing, reading this stuff will drive you nuts. But if your client depends on web hits, it's very important to understand how to manipulate text without having the website become unreadable. It's definitely an art...

the text should sound natural - search engines are getting smarter. the text should have keywords and phrases repeated, but not over and over. that might be considered stuffing by the search engines. also, the pages shouldn't be really long 250-500 words is ideal for each page.

1. SEO writing is search-engine optimized. The words you wish to rank for are used frequently but subtly in the article. Relevant synonyms can also be used to get an article to rank.

2. A good SEO article is highly readable. It is organized and formatted for Web. The search terms are subtle, and used no more than 9 times total in the article; 5 to 6 times is ideal. The author will have made good use of optimized hyperlinks and side bars to drive up rankings without making the article sound like it's been written by someone whose first language is not English.

Yes, SEO can be done very well. But it needs to be learned and practiced. It's also no good on its own. It needs to be combined with blogging, viral video, or traditional print advertising to be successful. It is not the sole means by which any business should advertise.

I do this kind of writing, and I do it for science and tech and higher education, subject areas that demand good business writing skills. Trust me, if you are skilled, it is VERY possible to consistently produce excellent work with very subtle optimization.

The kind of writing you describe is the bane of SEO's existence. It makes SEO look like a big scam, and honestly most of it is. But when done well and in tandem with other means of advertising, it produces a good ROI.

The relative importance of SEO
I should clarify my comment above....

It's not that SEO isn't important, it's that good, thoughtful writing is often already optimized for search engines simply by being rich with a variety of vocabulary to express thoughts and ideas.

My frustration with SEO is that so many think that it's some sort of technical magic that only expensive consultants can understand, and its importance to a site's prominence is over-emphasized compared to the basics -- useful content, frequently posted, for a long time, with writers who are also actively marketing their work and reputation through commenting on other sites, participating in forums/BBSs, writing guest posts, using StumbleUpon/MyBlogLog/BlogCatalog/Digg/Delicious/FriendFeed, posting links to good stuff on your Facebook page, being active on Twitter, etc.

Too many think that they can throw their writing out there and the Google bots will bring them traffic without any further effort. I'd say that half the battle, maybe even 2/3 of the battle, is marketing your work in the online community.

Write for humans, not Google.

Hi Seafayer, I think the reason there's so much bad SEO writing is that every web designer on earth is now claiming SEO expertise in addition to having programming and design skills. So you get all these techies (some with a minimal grasp of English) who are pushing SEO services on top of everything else. And since most non-techie occupations, such as, say, CPAs (to pick an occupation at random) are generally clueless about web marketing, they agree to let their web designer also do the writing, hoping to save some money. Which explains a lot...
