Good day everyone,

Forgive the X-POST

I hired a new writer. And, I knew that it'd proobably be a bit of a learning curve. I didn't mind that because he was passionate. However, I need some tips on the following to convey to him:

1) There is a section that he interviews CEOs of big companies. How should he approach this? Is it the same as an entertainment figure i.e. haggling the publicist/secretary or is there less red tape?

(Honestly, I thought that this would be easy, he is nervous...)

2) Are there any books that cover how to approach the person you want to interview, or say for example: "How to get interviews with famous people".

I am a former publicist - long gone are the days that I needed to get anything into a paper. I have forgotten the butterfly feeling and I am reading the emails puzzled.

However, I know that they exist for people who are new.

Any suggestions.

Forgive any grammatical errors - I am rushing and want to reassure him asap.

On my side, I have the books : Writers Market. I swear by The Publicity Handbook...but, on his side (the writer) I don't have a clue?

Thanks in advance!

I'm sure that any interviews with CEO's of major companies will need to be set up via their PR/communications department. Just go to the website of the company you're interested in, check the "news" section and there should be contact names on the press releases they've posted. As far as interviewing tips, there are a zillion books out on this topic--just do some Amazon searches---, but what's more important is the publication you represent. Most major CEO's won't give their time to small websites or mags with tiny circulations; you have to make the case that your publication/website/tv show is influential with their customers or shareholders. Which is why you may need to start small.

If your new writer is that nervous about contacting interview sources then I have to wonder how comfortable he's going to be doing actual interviews...

Just a thought.
