Just pitched a publication featured in a recent HTP. It was listed as being a buck-a-word outlet.

Just got off the phone with the editor. They do NOT PAY for stories.

Those HTPs have been getting progressively more sloppy, but this is a new low.

Remind me again where my Avantguild money is going?

To investors in Jupiter Media, of course. Not to help the people who actually use this site, silly. Why would anyone think MB gives a s--t about its users any more?

Are you kidding? What a waste -- and thanks for sharing this.
I've yet to even use HTP and this is one reason why.

I have found some of the HTPs in MB to contain outdated info.

Which HTP was it? So the rest of us don't waste our time with it.

i think all the HTPs are a waste of time. these editors express enthusiastic interest in being pitched, then NEVER respond. yeah, yeah, i know. they're v. busy and can't respond to all queries, blah blah blah. but why give false hope when you know you are not going to give freelancers the time of day?
v. frustrating.

I haven't use HTP, but thanks for the heads up. Maybe when folks find stuff like this, they can let MB know.

Sophie is absolutely right, most are a complete waste of time. I doubt 10% of these editors are sincere about anything, much less hearing pitches from freelancers who are members of AvantGuild or any other cockamaimie (sp) writers/editors community.

I got a hit off the HTP
It was a smaller publication, but national, and the editors were great to work with.

Also heard back from a few others who said, "Not this pitch, but keep trying."

Of course this was before the economy went into the toilet. How things are now is anyone's guess.

HTP helped me considerably, but that may be because I'm just looking for it to help me BETTER my chances. I don't view it as a guarantee.

Another BTDT situation.
There have been several outlets that I've pitched and the rate they offered me is vastly different than what's listed on HTP.

When I say "This is the rate advertised on HTP" I've received a bit of a song and dance, so I don't know if it's MB's issue or pubs aren't being truthful.

I've also taken issue with the various HTPs that ultimately have editors admitting they don't really assign too much, even less than 10%. Then what's the point, really?

I too, am reconsidering membership for next year.

But is there a better option?
Frankly, I'm not expecting much anywhere these days. Writer's Market certainly isn't better--especially regarding search features--though it does have an impressive index of pubs.

Until then, email blake@mediabistro.com and let him know about errors--he's the ed assistant that deals with HTP.

I think a better option would be the market guides in Freelance Success. I think a problem with Media Bistro's
HTP guides is that many were written years ago and then "updated' whatever that means. Did they actually
talk to anyone while updating or just check a masthead?
Also, it seems many of MB's guides are written by
newcomers who are inexperienced and don't ask hard questions. That's why I stopped reading the HPT guides.

I like the HTPs. They're helpful and I've gotten a couple of hits after using them. They're not the end-all be-all -- your pitch still has to be awesome -- but it's a useful resource.
