I'm looking for feedback on a service like Media Contacts Pro, vs. something a lot more costly like Cision (which swallowed Bacons).
Anyone? Thanks!

Betty,

You'd be better off posting this in the publicists' forum, as that's the place where you'll find people with experience in using and purchasing the various platforms.

I use Burrelle's Luce Media Contacts and like it. It's $2195 a year. I believe most of the Cision products, other than the plain, vanilla MediaMap which they still offer, are about $3,995.

I just did a round of research and found that for people who just want a media database, there's relatively little extra in Cision's product for the price. But if you need/use other things, it might be worth it.

Agree that you will get more feedback by posting under "Publicists" but you may also want to look in the archives - there are dozens of threads on this.

Cyrus, I just got an updated quote from Cision that was a heck of a lot closer to $4900 and that was without a whole lot of bells and whistles...without international (which drove it up well over $5K) and with single platform, no clip, etc. Worse, they are offering the worst "payment plan" of any company out there; basically they are willing to let you spread the payments over 90 days but by auto-debit or pre-set charge to a credit card. With all of the options out there and with a lot of PR firms leaving Bacons/Cision becuaes of their customer service issues, I'm surprised they haven't become a bit more competitive, but...

Maphop,

On other LinkedIn forums and venues, I see people complain about the data content of all the other providers and use that as a reason for going with Cision. I personally haven't found that with Burrelle's Luce, but I only use these services to put together an introductory list and then tweak it based on reading the pubs. I suspect the data issues are much bigger to someone who doesn't specialize and is always having to put together new lists.

Hello
I got a quote and payment plan from Cision a few days ago. Due to the economy and my freelancer status, the Rep was able to stretch my payment over a 5 month period. The Rep at Cision said they solely specialized in working with freelancers and small business operations. This was a unique offer since I was told I had to pay for everything in full in the past. I used to work at an agency and I relied on Bacon's every day. I am happy I can get the database at an affordable rate. It costs a little bit more than the other service but I don't think there is a comparison. I find the data, ed cals and distribution is much better with Bacon's. I think BurrellesLuce owns Media Contacts Pro and they are a good clipping service for print but I am not so sure about the database. What do you think? How much did Media Contacts Pro cost you? Did you like the ed cals and data?

P.S. I don't understand what you meant when you stated that Bacon's got swallowed by Cision. I think Bacon's just changed their name. The main operations are still in Chicago. I'm in Chicago. Where are you?

I doubt the list got you your press :-) but it's nice to know you like the service. I've not tried it, only heard anecdotal reports from other PR professionals who seem to like other services better. Always nice to hear feedback.

I tailored our first emailing from the MediaContactsPro list
I tailored our first emailing from the MediaContactsPro list. In my many years of experience, I found the results extraordinary." When "The Cosby Show" became the #1 television show in America, The Brokaw Company handled its publicity--as it has for Bill Cosby for more than 20 years. When "Roseanne" became a top-ranked television show, The Brokaw Company was in charge of its publicity too."

Is it just me or does this last post seems more like an ad for your shop than an endorsement of a platform?

Cyrus,

Oddly, these quotes are taken from a testimonial on the Media Contacts Pro Web site.

Well, then they're not very well serving in this context if they're testimonials on the site. Testimonials are effective if a person's going to use something in the same context as those referenced; most people in PR don't work on behalf of TV shows/producers. And further still, those who DO generally won't be involved with a show that involves a household name.

That post probably came from a company rep.

Feedback on Media Contacts Pro vs...
We have found Media Contacts Pro very useful with extensive information on every media outlet and media staff in the US and worldwide (see www.mediacontactspro.com/download.php). It is user friendly for a low price.

I recommend it as it is almost the same data as Cision or PRNewswire but at a greatly reduced price that fit our budget. We couldn't afford Cision any longer in this economy. Again, greatly recommended.
