I am thinking about moving to New York next Spring.

I current live in Chicago and am curious to know how the current job market is in New York City particulary in the fashion industry.

Also if anyone has any information about the best way to get into a magazine office that would be great!

Thank you.

Although I personally don't have any experience or interest in the fashion industry, my sister does and she received a degree in fashion design from a prestigious NYC arts school and is currently living there.

I think it depends on what facet of the fashion industry you are interested in. If you are interested in merchandising or buying as opposed to designing, it can make a big difference. Even within the designing field, it can make a difference if you want to do haute couture or ready to wear.

All I can say is that my sister had a very hard time coming upon an assistant designer position and is now an assistant manager at a clothing store. Also, assistant designer positions don't pay squat.

To be more specific.... I am more interested in the buying/
planning side of the fashion business. If you don't mind me asking, does she live in Manhattan? If so, did she have a hard time finding a reasonable priced apartment?

I guess that it all depends on what you would consider to be "reasonably priced". What NYers would consider to be reasonably priced is generally way out of wack with what a midwesterner like me would consider to be. The only problem with Manhattan is that to get an apartment you really need to go through a broker. So, you then have broker fees, plus first and last month's rent, and if you're renting an apartment that costs $1,000/mo. it's going to add up fast. I would suggest going to Craigslist. It's a fabulous website where people post sublets and shares and you can avoid the broker fees. For more on apartment issues, you might want to check out the threads on that topic.

On the buyer note, my sister worked at Saks in their internship program which is a stepping stone into their executive training program which would lead to a buyer or management position in the company. I know a couple of people who have done this program and are now assistant buyers with Saks.

Just wanted to add
that my sister does not currently work at Saks, but is an assistant manager at another store located on Madison Ave. :)

If you're looking for apartments, check out villagevoice.com. If you're savvy enough, you can get an apartment without paying a broker's fee - especially these days.

Bloomingdales also has an executive trainee program.

Check into retail catalogs also. They all have buyers. Try Saks, Neiman Marcus, Anthropolgie, Victoria's Secret, J. Crew, etc., etc. You'd prob. have to start as a "junior buyer" but you'd learn a ton, and prob. get promoted fairly quickly.

When I say Saks, I mean the catalog division, which I think is separate from the store, though I'm not positive.
