Reporting to the President, the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications serves as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, and is responsible for developing and executing a clearly defined marketing and communications strategy that increases the visibility of CMI work and creates new ways of engaging contributors, while ensuring a consistent marketing message and position consistent with the CMI's direction. 


The Director will oversee the Communications, Marketing and Public Education teams. This is an exempt position located in our NYC headquarters. We offer competitive salary and benefits.


Responsibilities
  • Create and execute innovative marketing and public relations strategies, including both traditional and social media, to guide CMI leadership in cultivating and enhancing relationships with the media, donor organizations, key stakeholders, and the general public

  • Lead the marketing and communications aspects ofmajor events and other development campaigns

  • Lead and develop strategy for advocacy messaging across channels, including traditional and digital

  • Serve as a spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization

  • Develop and cultivate national/international media connections; supervise external media partner to capitalize on media placements

  • Manage, align and leverage vendor partnerships and contractors who support CMI communication initiatives

  • Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration throughout the organization

  • Manage the development and dissemination of consistent creative collateral and web-based marketing/communication materials - podcasts, webinars, brochures, social media messaging, displays/booths, etc.

  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with Executive Leadership Team and Staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them

  • Coach and educate staffin best practices in cultivating and maintaining a compelling and authentic brand identity and ensuring consistency of communications insupport of CMI brand

  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications, marketing and public education function including budgeting and planning, and the establishment and monitoring of staff performance/development goals


  • Qualifications and requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree preferred

  • Minimum of 10 years experience holding progressively responsible positions in marketing and communications for nonprofit, corporate, and/or agency organizations, including strategic planning, marketing and media relations

  • Expertise in translating business goals and strategies into actionable and measurable marketing and communication campaigns.

  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive strategic communications, media relations, marketing and advocacy program to advance an organization's mission and goals

  • Team player with ability to establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships

  • Exceptional interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. Ability to effectively interact with people across all levels of the organization including Board of Directors

  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills

  • Demonstrated team leadership abilities. Ability to manage high priorities and multi-task in a fast-paced work environment

  • Excellent skills on PC and Macintosh computer systems and associated software

  • Passion for the CMI mission
