Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. Voting may be over, but there's still plenty of election dissection being done. Dan Rather, Lesley Stahl, Joe Scarborough, Geraldine Ferraro, and Arianna Huffington are among the notables participating in election post-game panels this week...
Sick of hearing about presidential politics? No problem -- this week is filled with plenty of other opportunities to rub shoulders with media A-listers. As it happens, both Huffington and Ted Turner are hosting exclusive "An Evening With..." events two days apart where they'll swap stories and advice with guests, the media mogul version of showing up to a party wearing the same shirt as someone else...
Not to be outdone, Turner's rival Rupert Murdoch is also stepping out this week. He'll be at the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund's annual gala along with Sumner Redstone, Les Moonves, and former President Bill Clinton. In other black-tie benefit news, anchormen Tom Brokaw and Anderson Cooper will both play master-of-ceremonies at different dinners during the next few days. Cooper's gig is with the Elton John AIDS Foundation, where he'll share the stage with Sir Elton himself. Tickets are $2,500, but we'd pay double to see them pair up for a duet of Tiny Dancer...
It's officially a recession now, so galas may be out of your price range, but there are still plenty of free networking options, including Richard Blakeley's monthly Media Meshing party. You may have spotted Jessica Roy's appearance in the digitized final issue of 02138, but the controversial young writer who left New York for Paris shortly after attending Media Meshing back in August is still in France and won't be at this month's event...
Last Tuesday, we had to hit the polls after work so we arrived at the CNN Grill just moments before Barack Obama's historic victory. Liz Smith, according to one guest, "just sat in the center of the room signing autographs," and we caught up with Julia Allison and the rest of her NonSociety.com crew. Apparently, Allison and her business partner Meghan Asha were rooting for Obama while business partner Mary Rambin merely described herself as an "Independent." We also saw British comedian Eddie Izzard who said he would have voted for Obama if he was a US citizen. MTV VJ John Norris declined to "reveal [his] political leanings," but he did say that he isn't as sad about the end of the Bush presidency as he is about the conclusion of Total Request Live...
Thanks to all the free booze at the CNN Grill, we were in need of some recovery at mediabistro.com and TVNewser's Election Hangover Party on Thursday, where we commiserated about how difficult it was to find newspapers on the morning after with ex-Huffpo Editor Rachel Sklar and New York Times media writer Brian Stelter. Stelter said he's going to hook Sklar up with one of the coveted New York Times Obama front pages since they had a "few extra lying around the office." Chicago and Portland are getting Election Hangover Parties of their own soon...
We'll be back next Monday to forecast which media events you won't want to miss, along with what went down at this week's hottest happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco...
