Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. Tomorrow America heads to the polls, and our calendar is packed with election-related goings on. On the big night itself, there are exclusive parties hosted by CNN and the Huffington Post. Over at New York Times HQ in Times Square, the paper is holding a sold-out election night panel, with their top two editors Bill Keller and Jill Abramson, editorial page boss Andrew Rosenthal, and columnist Frank Rich headlining a roster of veteran reporters. Dan Rather was scheduled to have his own election night discussion at the 92nd Street Y, but it looks like the former CBS News anchor stood them up. 92Y's Web site now says: "Due to production limitations Dan Rather will be unable to host our Election Night program." Two weeks ago, HDNet announced that Rather would be anchoring their election coverage live from the Newseum in Washington, D.C. We can't help but wonder what exactly went down with that...
After the votes are counted, political junkies can recover at mediabistro.com and TVNewser's Election Hangover parties in New York and San Francisco. Invites are available "for full-time media professionals only" who RSVP online. TVNewser editors Chris Ariens and Steve Krakauer will be there along with my boss, mediabistro.com CEO Laurel Touby at the New York event. We also wouldn't be surprised if TVNewser alum Brian Stelter dropped by that night. Chicago and Portland will be getting TVNewser post-election parties of their own later this month...
Speaking of politics, ex-VP and Current TV owner Al Gore heads up the group of A-list speakers lined up for this week's Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang, Arianna Huffington, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Digg's Kevin Rose, and cyclist Lance Armstrong are among the big names slated to speak to Summit guests. Here in New York, ad:tech, the Marketing & Online Communities Conference, and OMMA Ad Nets will keep digital marketing professionals busy networking, strategizing, and of course, partying hard...
Last week, Halloween fell on Friday, but the media world seemed to be celebrating it a day early. On Thursday night, tabloid heiress, contributor, and target Lydia Hearst held court at 1Oak's Halloween masquerade where she came dressed as Page Six. A few blocks further east, we went to the farewell party for Radar at Citrine. Radar's last cover subject Shannen Doherty barely spent any time in the club, but there were plenty of media types in the crowd: We spotted Village Voice columnist Michael Musto, who's basically like our spiritual leader here at The Press List. When we asked Musto his opinion of the recent changes to the Voice offices at Cooper Square, he shrugged them off saying, "I still have a desk." It's probably hard to get upset these days when you've still got a media job, desk or not. We also saw Ben Widdicombe who followed in Julia Allison's footsteps as Star editor-at-large. Apparently, it's not tough to be Allison's successor, since she allegedly wasn't exactly the most popular person at the magazine. Later in the evening, we saw Widdicombe again, along with Clusterstock editor John Carney and Huffington Post's Rachel Sklar, for an afterparty at Radar editor-in-chief Maer Roshan's place. We noticed that Roshan had what can only be described as the ultimate New York media library: His bookshelf boasts copies of William Shawcross' biography of Rupert Murdoch, Gay Talese's New York Times exposé The Kingdom and The Power, and the Talmud...
We'll be back next Monday with a rundown of all the election night madness, along with a forecast of the coming week's hottest happenings. Be sure to check our new sections 'Conferences, Etc.' for multi-day events and 'Beyond New York' for this week's media events beyond the Big Apple in Norwalk, Connecticut, and San Francisco...
