Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. This afternoon at the Waldorf-Astoria, the 68th Annual Peabody Awards honor excellence in electronic media. A host of network television executives and journalists will be in attendance, including Jeff Zucker, Dick Ebersol, Doug Ellin, Lorne Michaels, Sean McManus, and Gwen Ifill. NBC anchor Brian Williams is playing emcee, handing out awards to CNN's election team, Saturday Night Live, 60 Minutes, PBS' Washington Week, and The Onion's Web site and more.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, mediabistro.com explores how to profit from new media technologies in a difficult economy at the Web 3.0 Conference. At the upcoming second annual Mediabistro Circus June 2-3, top-level professionals including Ning.com CEO Gina Bianchini and Numerati author Stephen Baker will further delve into maximizing your impact with digital media (and Cirque du Soleil will perform -- stay tuned for details).
Speaking of new media, on Thursday Nick McGlynn of RandomNightOut.com steps in to fill the void created last winter when Gawker video editor Richard Blakeley stopped holding his wildly popular Media Meshing parties each month. McGlynn has organized "Obliterati," a bar night enabling New York's new media scenesters to, per the invite, "mesh again, like we did last summer." It's yet to be decided whether Obliterati will continue beyond this first event, but we bet we'll see more from McGlynn this summer: There's been buzz surrounding a possible collaboration between he and Garcon magazine fashionista Adrien Field, and the Obliterati invite advises recipients to "keep an eye out for some new and exciting future developments coming to RandomNightOut.com."
Last week, we went to a party celebrating the Spring issue of the New York Review of Magazines, written by students from the magazine program Columbia School of Journalism. We asked two of the soon to graduate student contributors, Matt Bachtel and Elizabeth Henderson if they were worried about finding work in the increasingly competitive market and they proved the value of their J-school dollar by answering "yes" immediately and in unison. The Spring 2009 NYRM went live this morning, and includes features on the short life of The New York Times' now-defunct Play magazine, former Simon & Schuster editor Dedi Feldman's new digital publishing company, and an interview with The Daily Beast's Tina Brown. FishbowlNY has more on the New York Review of Magazines launch event.
With the upcoming Memorial Day weekend slated to shorten workweeks the media world around, we'll be back the week after next to forecast upcoming media events you'll want to know about, along with all that went down at the prior week's hottest happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Chicago, Dallas, Vancouver, and California...
